    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

I do wonder if the person concerned still posts occasionally under a different name. The odd giveaway, but I'm not going into further detail on my thoughts as I don't want the nasty characters who hounded him out to start again. And, yes, he was always spot on with his comments and predictions.

As for Binbrook, its now effectively an open access industrial park; you can go and look at 42859 any time you want, or you could when I was last there.
Don't know the overall condition of 42859's boiler but the firebox has half side patches riveted on. A once common repair but unlikely to be done nowadays. 61264 had this at its original restoration. The boiler from 30830 also has this (but that will probably change).

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

Does anyone know if there are any pictures of 42859 in its dismantled state kicking about? I would be interested to see.

    Thanks

It must have been taken a while ago as 35011 has not been there for some time.

thanks for the image, she does look a bit untidy now unfortunatly. It says in the box below the date was 2003, if no work has been done, I'm guessing there will be a lot more corrosion now.
Such a shame, would love to see another crab up and running!

one itinerant scrap merchant and a hyab and that will be gone for good. Doesnt look like there is much in the way of security.

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

A sad story this one. For such a useful and interesting class of locomotive it is a shame that the present owner has not saw fit to kick start a restoration project or pass it on to someone who would/could. What the reasons are behind the current situation I do not know and will not guess at.

    Hi

The writing on the cabside at Barry in this photo says "fools folly - knackered firebox - official"
    Barry Scrapyard - LMS 5FH class 42859 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Very sad - did my driver experience on the East Lancs Crab and got the Bachmann model too - favourite loco followed by Ivatt Class 2

    Cheers

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

Never - it was a 'Blue' restricted route in GWR/BR days (up to 17t 12cwt axle load) which I believe that the Crabs exceeded. The route was not upgraded until well into the preservation era. Interestingly the original buyer of 42765 indicated that he wanted to bring it to Llangollen from Barry but it went to the KWVR instead.

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

Looks quite stripped in Barry, apart from 42765, would its bits be useful to anything else in preservation ?

Whilst money fixes everything, it would be expensive for new parts, it would make for a strong engine too.. 42859 would be a great addition to the mainline fleet being 6p5f, of the remaining Barry wrecks to steam, this has to be one of the more desirable ones, we all know nice things cost more.
But it does all come down to one thing... The owner and what he wants to do with it.

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

That never stopped some people taking what they could anyway. Its rods apparently ended up with another loco group who wanted some serious ££ching for them ...
