2857 - Churchward, Ex GWR is receiving attention to her motion and cylinders, following an initial period back in traffic. At 1 February she had been partly dismantled for assessment of any damage to rear covers and valve chests etc.
4566 - Small Prairie Tank, Ex GWR - Winter maintenance involves valve and piston repairs and removal of the centre driving wheel set using the wheel drop. The four corner driving axle horn guide castings are being removed, built up with weld and re-machined, and new fitted bolts are being turned. Fretting damage to the mating surfaces on the frame and cracking round the bolt holes is being painstakingly ground out and also built up with weld. At 2 February the left driving rear horn casting had been refitted. The front one was off and the frame edge being built up.
42968 - Stanier Mogul, Ex LMS was at 2 February detached from 45110's tender and about to get her own back.
43106 - Ivatt Class 4, LMS-design - was at 2 February having her snifting valves refurbished

2857 is currently waiting for a space in the shed before any more work can be undertaken on stripping the cylinders. Most of the work so far has been done by the owning group however it is now necessary for 28 to be in a more protective environment for the paid staff (aided by the 28 lads) to crack on with some of the more sensitive work. Another concern being that once the work advances much further 28 will not be so easy to move around the yard for a while, so it makes sense for it to be inside, not trapping anything required for service. This will probably happen when 4566 is ready to be moved from the wheeldrop after it's axlebox work is completed. It is also likely that the rolling chassis of 1501 will be moved at that point, to enable it to be moved around to the boilershop to accept the boiler onto the frames once this is completed. Exciting times!

    Cheers,
    Andy.

1501 is currently under overhaul, it's documented earlier in this thread IIRC...

Yes, I'm sure it was. A look back to last July shows

"2857’s place in the paintshop has been taken by the boiler and firebox cladding sheets from 1501, spread out on timber pallets for ease of access. This follows an initial very thorough session with the steam cleaner. The painting of the frames and wheels is virtually complete awaiting completion of mechanical work before reassembly. The tanks, bunker and cab roof remain on a wagon out in the yard awaiting their turn. It too recently developed ‘silver cylinder syndrome’ (The Bugle, SVRA website)"

    Regards

Yup, 1501's frames were on the lifting jacks at the time, situated on the same road as the wheel drop.

Plenty of progress since the last update on the 8th Feb.

2857 is currently being reassembled (was about 50% there at the weekend) with a view to her being steamed on Friday of this week which will, with any luck, lead to her being signed off for active service once again.

The decision was made to progress the stripping down out in the yard as the work on 4566's axleboxes has taken longer than expected. if we had waited for 45's spot in the shed it could have been april before we had a fit and healthy 28 back in service, which isnt ideal. So to cut a long story short, the cylinders were stripped down with nothing particularly alarming or untoward discovered. The most significant discovery was some scarring to the cylinder liner, believed to have been caused by some small debris or other that had snuck in, but this is not particularly concerning and we were given the all clear to begin reassembly.

So its fingers crossed for the test steaming at the end of this week, and then for a nice quiet running season for our old girl (96 this year!).

    Cheers,
    Andy

    Excellent news.

By the way, Andy, have you heard any gossip around Bridgnorth as to what might be the SVR "hire-in" loco for the Summer? Just curious.

I haven't heard anything even approaching official, but there are a few suggestions. I've heard 5542 mooted, although its perhaps a bit lightweight (would be limited to 6 mk1's like 4566). 5643 & 3802 from Llangollen are past visitors that could be good options, but we tend to try to go for something different. Ideal locos are really class 4/5.

There's been no noise from those in charge though, not even confirmation that they are looking for a hire in loco, although I'd be amazed if they aren't. We've got an active fleet of 6 currently, with 1501 & 813 expected in traffic by the middle of the year. Taw Valley is anyone's guess. We really need 8 locos minimun for peak operations.

Andy, Question and Answer Session says

    "The Question & Answer

    1. We have 26 locos but we will have to hire in this year".

(But it doesn't say which one!)

Wouldn't mind seeing a return of a 9F which proved very popular last year. The Great Central seem to have plenty of motive power at the moment, perhaps the gresley tank could be persuaded to extend it's stay or maybe the red 8F? Would look great on the LMS set!
