Does anyone know of a list or record of all preserved engines which have yet to be restored? As the number of restored engines grows it is harder to get attention or funding for those first timers still waiting in the queue. Most if not all have now spent more time in scrap condition than they ever did in service. The most recent "first time restore" I am aware of was Black 5 45379 and that was a while ago now.
It would be good to have a full nationwide outlook of which ones we can expect to appear next. On the mid hants I think the next "first timer" will be Standard 4MT 75079 but that won't appear until 2013.
We should champion and celebrate every new arrival on every line which adds to the overall pool. Anyone got a list of which "first time since BR" newbies we can expect this year?

There's 4150 the large prairie at the SVR. Its being worked on by its owning group and shouldnt be far away from moving to bridgo now. Expect to see it run within the next 5-6 years.

I think that 45379 was completed in time for the MHR 2010 Autumn Gala, so does that make 6023 the most recent first timer?

Regarding what comes next, 34053 Sir Keith Park ought to be back in steam this year, also S160 6046 on the CVR.

41298 on the Isle of Wight shouldn't be too far away either - and particularly noteworthy as unlike 6023 and 45379, it went straight from BR into preservation, rather than being sent to Barry.

Here's a stab at a list of the Barry locos still to steam - in departure order. I'm doing this from memory plus the Greatwestern.org website, so please correct me anyone if I make any mistakes:-

    46447 (unlikely to steam)
    7027 Thornbury Castle
35029 Ellerman Lines (well, it has been sectioned, not restored)
    4942=2999 Lady of Legend
    7202
    4150
    41313
    6989 Wightwick Hall
    80100
    78018
3612 (Will not be retored - spares for 5764 and 7714)
    4110
    46428
    35018 British India Line
    45699 Galatea
    92134
    4121
    2885
    5532
    9629
    6634
    45491
    5952 Cogan Hall
    7200
    44123
    75079
    34010 Sidmouth
    76084
    35006 P&O
    78059=84030
    30499
    34053 Sir Keith Park
    7229
    35010 Blue Star
    80097
    92219
    4270
    35025 Brocklebank Line
    35022 Holland America Line
4248 (Not likely to be restored to working order, but exhibited in STEAM museum Swindon)
    34058 Sir Keith Park
    3814
    73156
    6984 Owsden Hall
    4979 wootton Hall
    92207
    45293
    42859
    45163
    5538
    76077
    5967 Bickmarsh Hall
    3855
    4253
    5668
    2874
30830 (Unlikely to steam as 30830. One engine to be kept going from the combined remains of 30825/30/41.)
    2859
2861 (probably to be cut up for new-build projects)
    5227 (Ditto)
2873 (I think this loco is basically a source of spares)
    3845
    3862
4115 (I think already being dismantled)
    5539
    6686
    7927=6880 (well, sort of)
34073 249 Squadron (hopefully not desitned for spares)
    35009 Shaw Savill
    35011 General Steam Navigation
    44901
    48173
    48518 (For spares???)
    80150
92245 (May be presrved unrestored to show what a Barry wreck was like)

    Hope I haven't missed any

The frames from 7927 have been used for the 'County' project. Only the boiler will be used on 6880.

Well that's some memory you have there John - I can't even remember where I just put my tea mug. Methinks it may be worth me creating a new database to audit all the unloved engines yet to see their first lick of rustoleum as I can't seem to find a current resource.

I juat went through the list in departure order on the greatwestern.org website and noted the engines that hadn't steamed. So far not many corrections (when you get into new builds and which bits of which engine end up where, life does get a bit complicated) but I hope it was helpful. Can't oblige on which locos will be steaming this year, although 34053 looks a good bet with 41298, 35006 and 45491 not too far behind. You could almost add 925 Cheltenham to that list. OK, it was restored for Rainhill 1980, but it was a pretty brief appearance. Otherwise, pretty well all its 50 or so years in preservation have been spent as a static exhibit. It's good that this is about to change.

It's also good how many engines which I (and doubtless others) thought were destined to a long future as "unloved" have seen a dramatic change in fortune. 4253 is a good example. Yes, it's a good few years' wait before it steams again, but there's no doubting the commitment of the team at the K&ESR to tackle their first Barry wreck. 80150 is another long-term job, but although, to put it mildly, it was not exactly the best of the 80xxx tanks to be sent to Barry (hance the reason why the Bluebell passed it over in favour of 80100 in spite of the latter never being SR-based) one can be confident that the MHR will do a good job on it - every bit as good as the Llangollen boys have done with the other "basket case" 2-6-4T 80072.

3855, 5967 and 35018 also look to have a much brighter future than seemd the case a couple of years ago. I guess there are a few others..

I suppose it's true to say that many of the engines on your list John are being worked on or missing parts are being obtained for them. Indeed, some of those on the list are in an advanced stage of restoration which leaves us with the question 'which ones will never steam'.

Possibly only 10% will never steam which represents a magnificent acheivement by the steam heritage movement..

I wonder how many of these loco would of been running by now if parts weren't removed from these locos at Barry and used on other locos or just stored for future use by other loco groups?

How many fewer you mean. Without the parts taken from other locos (which no one expected would be saved) the engines that built the preservation movement would never have been got going.

Rubbish ! 200 locos equates to 200 sets of fittings. The finger should be pointed at the selfish & downright greedy groups which plundered multiple sets of parts. Certain people had not even bought locos. from the yard , but by their actions set back the restoration of many locos.

Plundered? Woodhams sold what was then but scrap. Most from locos that have basically remained scrap because that is why they were sent to Barry in the first place.

It would be instructive to see the steamed list, and if possible, correlate it with the known condition when locos were bought from Woodhams - you might find that money chased the best prospects - then and now.

A lot of fittings were removed by Woodhams in the early days to stop the them being stolen (by metal theives - its nothing new) There is a lot of 'first hand anecdotal evidence' to support the story that certain people/groups took far more than just enough parts to complete their own loco (which is what DW generally agreed to)

People seem to forget that in the early years nobody thought that nearly all the locos in Barry would be saved. Those parts were 'saved' from the expected scrapping of the locos. It is easy with hindsight looking back to say that those parts should still be on the same loco. But if they had been scrapped we would have lost all of those spares.

That is little excuse for selling, or attempting to sell, the items, often at exorbitant prices, to the purchasers of the locos that they were 'acquired' from.

Or indeed trying to sell a Barry hulk at 3 or 4 or 10 times what is was bought for. Unfortunately we live in a world of opportunism. This was brought home to me quite savagely when some parts I laser cut for an enthusiastic lad, pleading poverty, for just the cost of the steel appeared on ebay by the same person and were sold at over 10 times what I received. Nice thought that people will 'give away' parts. I am not falling for that one again though.

Not as far as I am aware (I remember it being shunted by 92203, but it had its rods off)
