One example is the Harrow crash... That was 46202 piloted by 45637.

uksteam showing steam all the way back to Bescot on the return running an hour behind 70000. t0310a.htm

Makes up for the diesel all the way to Carnforth in the morning.

This is logical, get to Carlisle sooner, get back over the S&C in daylight and run steam back to Bescot and not just Crewe, all instead of running Crewe to Carnforth with steam in the morning.

Very disappointing for those joining at Crewe, based on the original advertisement, who are now going to lose 78 miles of steam between Crewe and Carnforth. The additional mileage south of the Crewe in the evening is of no use to them.

Still 7 hrs of steam running though from what I can make of it. Lovely !!! Its a really long day from the outset, and maybe the change just extra insurance ? We know what happened to the Paddington -Bristol run recently where passengers expected to be back at Paddington 9ish and were 2 1/2 hrs late !! And I see there's an extra bit of diesel to get back to Tyseley at 11 !! There'll be a few lay-ins next day. Certainly need to leave Carlisle on time.

I agree. Even with steam from Crewe to Bescot (in the dark), it's still a net loss of over 30 miles of steam. I can't help thinking that, had it been a different promoter, people on here would be jumping up and down about this fairly significant change from what was advertised.

We understand and apologise to any passengers from Crewe who feel they are loosing out. We certainly do not want to deprive anyone of mainline steam mileage. The sole reason for the modification to the plan was to eliminate one outbound water-stop (a lengthy one for a double-header) and ensure we get back down the S&C in the daylight. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I for one will be joining at Crewe, but on the return may well stay on board to at least Stafford to see how they manage Madeley bank, or even go on to Wolverhampton. There are a couple of reasonable connections back to Crewe.
I suppose you can't please all the people all the time...

Taken from the advert still on Vintage Trains Website:-

"From Hellifield, our route takes us through Blackburn, Bolton and Manchester to Crewe on our way home to Tyseley"

The timings now show the train as returning direct via the WCML. I suppose we get what we get at the end of the day but just anoher disappointment with more lost steam mileage and no thrash up Miles Platting. At least the climbs over Shap and Ais Gill are still there. Lets hope they turn out to be epic climbs with no diesel on the back.

Where are the timings? I have looked at VT, UK steam and even RYTC Cumbrian mountain expresses page and all say the the same thing. for
For VT: Carnforth to Carlisle(Shap), Carlisle to Settle, Hellifield, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester, Crewe to Bescot.

    Dear 6:05 special.

I apologise again if you think you have been cheated. If you give me a ring in the office Monday we can discuss it further. If you do not wish to go on this tour, we can give you a credit, especially with 2 weeks to go.

The route we have been offered for the return is Carlisle>S&C>Hellifield>Blackburn>Cherry Tree>Farington Jctn>WCML.

I am looking at the current accepted times for the weekend. The 47 returns from Carnforth to Tyseley on Saturday before noon...it does not come with us to Carlisle...HOWEVER....given the pair on the frount, would it really matter if it did come with us? 6201+5043 combined could still charge up Shap with the 47's brakes jammed on!

Sorry about that - it was a bit busy this morning! Got your PM - Thank-you.

I have asked our webmaster to update the route on the website and a note will go in the letters with tickets and times tomorrow.

    Regards.
