I agree that the UK is in Europe by proximity based definition, but it is not part of the European landmass. The UK is a group of separate islands, divorced from mainland Europe by the English Channel. AFAIK England and France are roughly 21 miles apart, not conjoined like North & South America are.

Similarly, Japan is defined as part of Asia, yet it is not part of the Asian Continent.

How do you define Crete or Sardinia? Separate islands or part of the European continent? 8^)

If those 8Fs worked in Persia (Iraq), Egypt and Italy, then they'd qualify.

Upstart colonials who want to keep on arguing. 8^)
What did one of their Prime Ministers say about his opposite number in another country?... That's it - contumacious comes to mind. 8^)

Well, it is really, because the European landmass extends beneath the channel. The UK is not on a separate tectonic plate!
I'd argue that continents are defined more by culture than by landmass in any case. After all, both the Americas and Europe/Asia share land borders, so shouldn't both be regarded as one landmass each? :p

There's ben a recent addition to the club, but it's a diesel.
One of the shunters used by the MoD and given TOPS number 01504 has worked on three continents. Hsaving spent most of it's life in Britain, it went to America for a while, returned here and last year was sent to Liberia.

UK is as much part of the European continent as Tasmania is part of the Australisian continent.

Class 66's now operate in Egypt, though afaik they were new from Canada to Egypt and never worked in Europe.

There is a debate whether Europe is a continent at all, and not merely Asia's north-western peninsular!
