Why is Mallard more important, we have already got several A4s in main line condition, or nearly, another would be pointless.

I agree on 'Mallard', although it would be nice to see it in steam for the centenary of its feat. The Q1, though, would be a very interesting proposition for mainline; albeit one that is of limited use due to wheel diameter and light adhesive weight. I doubt it would cope with 10-13 coach trains on steep gradients, either, but taking its nominal power classification, 5F, on paper it should manage most of what a Black 5 can do on more favourable routes.

The point is, surely, that 'Scotsman' is probably THE most well-known locomotive of all time, and as such has a very special place in advertising railway preservation to the 'normals'...

    (I'll gloss over a certain fictional blue 0-6-0T, of course ;) )

I would suggest that next most well known is Tornado, then, probably, Mallard.

    In your opinion.

The few thousand people or more, who've donated to the project over the years would respectfully disagree. I would also counter your statement on the grounds that robbing future generations of the only Gresley A3 preserved, in steam, would be despicable. Why should they lose out because a few people are more concerned about the current costs, than the future gain to education and understanding of the generations to come?

Not only that, with the sad death of Alan Pegler this weekend gone, it would be poor form to give up now when the end is in sight.

The idea that we should effectively kill off what has been a working locomotive from 1923 up until the present day (albeit with gaps accepted, for overhaul) is laughable, particularly given its prominence and overall standing in the world outside of the railway enthusiast circle.

I personally don’t care whether Flying Scotsman has the same components it had in 1923. It’s not a museum piece, it's a working locomotive and always has been. That place in time and space, always reserved for 4472, has always been known as 4472. The number and the name remains constant, even if all the components do not. She is the sum of her components, no more and no less than we are throughout our lives.

Yes but in what time scale? Riley's doesn't have an inexhaustible supply of labour and no doubt has other contracts to fulfil.

This may be true but at least they can be trusted to do the job properly!

did i read somewhere that the boiler clock has been stopped until rileys steam 4472 again so at least the boiler ticket isnt being reduced whilst she gets fixed talking about the front bogie, i believe that its cracks in the hornblocks but as they are are cast they cant be welded up, i assume that york is doing this work to reduce rileys work load because his own work must be piling up by now

Are such problems on A1/A3 front bogies commonplace, i know that doncaster would replace complete frames at overhaul, would the same had been done to the other parts such as trailing truck and front bogie because if that was the case then the frames and other mechanical parts must have been almost life expired when this overhaul started, which would explain why so much beyond what is the norm has been needed.

While I fully support the NRM and the overhaul of Flying Scotsman and have always been very fond of the engine (despite the frustration I feel everytime I hear it's been delayed AGAIN!!!)

I would agree that for the sake of 4472, the NRM and it's team, and overall reputations, this project needs to be brought to a conclusion soon, especially for Ian Riley's sake.

Now while I am aware that Ian and his team can probably work on more than one loco at a time, it's how people in general see it that's the problem. I mean considering the fact that we've heard of very little progress on any other locos besides 4472 (and the B12), it's perhaps then understandable why people are jumping to that conclusion.

I just want to see the engine up and running soon, so that Ian can get on with other jobs in hand, which from what I hear, is alot...!

In fact if my memory serves correct there's TWO Merchant Navies (possibly a third), and a THIRD Black 5 for Ian's collection (albeit for only 10 years.)

So the man is busy, and I'd personally like to see him be able to move on to these projects aswell as others. And of course as I said before, for the 4472 reputation aswell, as I suspect people are get a bit tired of Flying Scotsman taking up space, and the poor old engine's reputation and popularity has already gone through it's fair share of trialling times... So I, and I'm sure many others, do not want it to be absent for much longer, as much for the sake of the engine and Ian Riley, aswell as ours...

From the other side, posted by IR himself.

On a positive note, as scheduled, the bogie has been removed to allow work on the bogie support cross stretcher.

The bogie itself has been taken to York to allow work on it to be carried out by NRM staff. Rileys' have a full order book, and this move will ease our congestion and allow parallel working with the NRM lads as well as the work being carried out at Bury.

I just find it very sad that we're getting comments to the effect of "waste of money" when the man who saved it in the first place has passed away just recently.

Out of respect for Alan Pegler, it would perhaps be a nice gesture to see some support for the locomotive and its custodians, than to constantly have to batter away unsubstantiated and unwholesome criticism.

I agree with you but its a little bit late now the loco is on the final straight of the overhaul so it wud be a bit pointless if they packed it up now, may as well get it finished I suppose.
Not sure about a Q1 on the mainline, but it would be nice to see it back on teh bluebell, double heading with the Q class to east grinstead! lovely!
We have other A4s running so mallard aswell would be pointless. My two instead of scotsman would be green arrow and butler henderson, with a bit of cash left over for 63601s next stint.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. :rolleyes1: but I would suggest you just sit back and wait a bit and then enjoy. FS WILL be sorted, and it WILL work on the mainline again.

I've always thought 2862 was quite a stylish looking loco and a wise choice for a Hornby model, although I realise the B17s weren't an unqualified success.

Or is there some other "Manchester United" to which you refer.........?

Perhaps if you had considered that 60029 is a teenager, and those of more mature age know that they, teens, do tend to speak out of turn and sometimes with brain disengaged, this is why I suggested a degree of tolerance, but no you just answer back with another low comment. Do you wonder why some despair of your attitude.
