Painting western locos is never easy when compared to a Standard tank ( 80072 ) all those rivets don't help, most of 5199s paintwork is nearly nine years old from a distance she looked good up close it was rough as she was rushed into service.
the paint has been patched up numerous times the boilers been off and the bunker tank has split a few times ( it had just started to leak again ) so in my view there isnt one straight piece on it and there is quite a few weeks of prep
She could of been painted at the CVR in the heated carrige shed and if 71000 are happy to have there support coach painted there I am sure it would of been a good job.....the S160 looks superb
As for any fool can paint the finish on 6880s frames clearly shows some people shouldnt be let loose with a a paintbrush on a million pound project.....mind you painting directly onto mill scale was never a good idea

After all I learnt on Talyllyn Nos. 1&2 and am now responsible for TR No.6. If Malcolm is the painter at Llangollen then I met him whilst helping to paint 9017 a couple of years ago

An opportunity to have a dig at those involved in a project you are no longer involved in...

No dig...... just pointing out flaws in the paintwork...which could still be rectified
And in my view should be
Google "painting on mill scale " and see for yourself
After all surely 6880 deserves a good standard of paintwork
As for not being involved I hardly think that matters when all we want to see is a quality job

Being a little naive I had never heard of mill scale.

I just googled mill scale and this website What exactly is Mill Scale? was the first to come up. It certainly shows the potential problems mill scale can cause if not removed. The comments/feedback were from worldwide and quite interesting. You learn something everyday.
