As it is the anniversary of probably the most famous ship in the world (and April fools day was a few days ago ) has anyone ever thought what it would be like to see new TITANIC .
I was in discussion ( late night...no alcohol ) a few years ago about the possibility of building a new/replica Titanic to an exact (as much as is feasible) specificatisn as the original, and we came to the conclusion that if someone with a lot of money and clout said lets do it it would happen.

    Your thoughts?

First voyage as the original; and she has to be built in Belfast.
Mad idea I know but why not?

Harlands would struggle to build a ship these days.
You would not get certification for a riveted hull.
No wood is allowed in new ship construction.
That's before you think about life-saving equipment.

Ok I can imagine regulations have changed a bit since then & I reckon Titanic may well of assisted in some of them
Welded hull it is then....False rivets anyone?
You cant get round the wood, there has to be some for the staircases etc
Harland wolf ...think of it as job creation skills centre etc. Just think of the queues of sightseers turning up to see her being built, the spin offs for this would have no limits the world would be watching TV rights, Film rights etc etc
As for life saving equipment..lifeboats maybe a few more but the passengers would be less
The engines though would have to be original with coal fired boilers

size of the engine rooms for reciprocating engines would not meet modern standards for the size of watertight compartments either.

You going to overlap the plates then weld the joints & stick on a few dummy rivets then ?
No wood means NO WOOD ! - especially a stairway which would almost certainly be classed as a means of escape !
Look up the latest SOLAS regs & plan your replica around them.

Just wondering about how the marketing campaign to sell tickets for the maiden voyage would be pitched?

Wouldn't it be easier to salvage the Britannic and rename it, no one would be any the wiser if you kept it quiet! :D

I've been working on that for some time now. It's almost ready and due to float off in 2014.

    It's called "Scotland"

What happened to the Olympic?........ that is the vessel that was built as Titanic, but then the names were swapped, so the conspiracy theory goes....which I believe.

There is a significant amount of evidence to corroborate this theory. Far too complex to go into here, may I suggest anyone interested finds a copy of a book entitled ' The ship that never sank' ( sorry I can't remember the author or publisher off hand ).

Olympic was broken up on the Tyne in the 30s - some of her fittings are to be seen in a hotel in Alnwick

Oh for heavens sake what a daft idea. A pseudo-replica Titanic? WHY???

Why not have a replica Princess Anne, or BoB Spitfire? Too morbid you say?

If we both win the Euromillions I'll float a business with you to get the Queen Mary back on the Atlantic run. I could see a point to that.

depends how you see it! any WWII aircraft to my mind does not instantly remind me of the morbid side of it but the great battle Great Britain had and how much the aircraft of that time played a part of that. and the crews were risking their life for the security of ours.

    cheers

I meant the Battle of Britain locomotive No.34066 Spitfire, which was the main player in the Lewisham Rail disaster of 1957, with 90 deaths.
