Actually an American company were going to build a replica Titanic for the American cruise market (I think in the 1980's) but (prepare yourselves for this) the idea seemed to have sunk without trace! (Sorry I just could not resist the last line, I'll get my coat.):ban:

Mind you, I think there is more chance of a new-build Titanic happening than the J39/L1 proposed on here, AND Hornby (in the guise of Airfix) do a model of it!

Sorry, but there is absolutely NO evidence to support such a theory - the ship that is at the bottom of the Atlantic is H&W hull #401 'Titanic' end of story!

I agree that would be marvellous .. but ... even if the money was available, she'd need a LOT of rebuilding below decks, after the vandalism that ripped out her heart (and some watertight bulkheads) from the machinery spaces. All of her boilers were scrapped and three of the turbines and power trains destroyed. All to make room for an exhibition hall space which remains largely unused. Making her interiors compliant with SOLAS regs on combustable material would also be a nightmare. She is the nearest thing you'll see to Titanic though.

Always worth a tour (or a hotel room) if anyone is in Southern California.

You'd agree the idea holds more water than a repro Titanic though :D

Hell yeah ! If it were possible I'd be over the moon. The history of the Atlantic ferry and the Cunard Steamship Company in particular is my 'thing!'

I'm sure it would be an insult to your interest to recommend 'The Ocean Railway'...?

Not at all! To be honest this is one I've missed ... thankyou! It's on its way from Amazon now - a nice read for my forthcoming trip across the pond on QM2 at the end of the month.

If the subject interests you I recommend 'The Only Way to Cross'

Anyone remember that dreadful 1970s film Raise The Titanic, with a thin plot based on the idea the ship was worth salvaging to recover the dilithium crystals it just so happened to be carrying (or something like that ... I think ..) ? It lost so much money the producer (Lew Grade) commented it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic.

Glad to be of service! I received it at Christmas from my Mum - she's a charity shop-a-holic and tends to have a sack of random bits and bobs she's picked up over the preceding twelve months ready at the festive season - the book was a particular 'hit'.

SOLAS regs? - Soon get around those with 'Grandfather Rights'! Just 'restore' the original Titanic, starting with The Big Piece (Along with other original items!) salvaged a few years ago! ;-)

There are no 'grandfather rights' any more. The regs. are now rigidly applied.

There's the classic example in Bristol where a complete new-build hull is being made for the Medway Queen paddle steamer, which will receive fittings from the original, rotting ship. Being Lottery funded, it is being built like the original with rivetted plates, which is not allowed these days, so it will be available only for moored visits and with a skeleton crew when taken to sea. There's a good webcam on their site.

The Official Medway Queen Preservation Society

The chappie who re-discovered the Titanic (can't remember his name) was on TV last week saying that he wished people would stop landing their submarines on the deck of the ship as it is damaging the structure. He then went on to say that the hull should be cleaned and repainted by machines... I'm sure I was wide awake. No livery debates, please.
