    Judging from what "so called" steam enthusiasts write on here, I am beginning to wonder whether their heart is really into steam at all.
    Also judging by what some people write, it is obvious they are "involved" in the national network in some way, with all the technical terms & trying to put us "civilians" down all the time.
    Dare I say it, it is turning this forum more like WNXX with all it's "mess room" talk.

    And that was going to happen today then at Scarborough was it, no I think not!

    Oakfield, it was obviously "not as advertised" but as already described with the sensible folk on here who have a brain cell, a reasonable arrival time was the best way to go for the passenger. I'm sure RTC will no doubt give a discount to a future tour as they have no choice to a degree but will then go after NR for this loss.

    Your comparisons are also way off as well so how about getting on that plane and done with it?

    Totally disagree, it's just that more people than others have an idea of how the network does actually run and not how they want it to run in their own little bubble!

    Poor analogy. The production and sale of a motor vehicle is not subject to the unknown variables that can affect the running of a rail tour.

    And be stranded because Ryanscare, Squeezyjet or whichever budget airline you choose decides to cancel the flight at short notice and basically tells you you're on your own.

    Agreed, I don't have a problem with the signal failure - these things happen. What annoyed me about today was the decision by Network Rail to 'park' the East Riding outside Peterborough (where we had arrived on time) and sort out everything else before getting around to us. Clearly the system was in a mess but the decision was made to put the ER at the bottom of the queue rather than process us with everything else. (There was, after all, the slow line up Stoke to run us while others went by, as happened once we were on the move). Put simply, NR ruined the day out at Scarborough by making us so late that there was no choice but to curtail the stopover at the coast. (We were told on the train that neither would NR sanction a later return because of planned engineering work - hence the diesel leg to York that did allow for a little extra time at Scarboro.)

    That said, there was some very swift running - e.g. through Newark. When given the chance Ollie blasted away up the ECML at and around its max speed with 450 tons gross behind the tender. The climb out of Bridlington up the five miles of 1 in 92 was impressive - a steady 24/25 mph with no sign of a slip - and the crew grabbed back over three quarters of an hour between Retford and Scarboro' .

    So, well done to the crew, and WCR/RTC for salvaging something. As for NR, I look forward to the time when someone successfully challenges this attitude of "charters come last". (The irony is that when it suits them - i.e. to get us back tonight and off their system - they let us run early. Plus 25 min back into KX)

    So when steam charters cause delays you'd have DBS or WCRC refunding NR for all the delays caused to passengers on other trains affected? Its just not affordable, thankfully the system recognises that.

    As i've said several times before, going down the route your suggesting would only serve to make NR hostile towards steam, a lot more risk averse when it comes to what it allows and the paths it provides, probably ban them from the mainlines and London entirely, and risk its long term future entirely. I fail to see how thats a good thing.

    While i can understand your frustration, there's nothing new or controversial about giving timetabled services priority - the knock-on effects to staff, passengers and other trains are far, far higher while they dont have the same options for gaining the time back.

    My understanding is if a steam trip cause delay's they are in fact fined by net work rail this had a big part in pastime downfall if i not right on this i am sure one of the tour company will tell us ;at the end of the day steam is out on main line and i for one hope it's out there for a long time to come it's a matter of give and take and yes i know i don't like not getting what we pay for no one doe's , but d.b.s. wcrc and all the tour company's do all they can to run what the say they will;
    long live steam on main line ;
    all the best

    BUT, it might just do exactly as advertised, NOBODY can foresee the unexpected. I don't think a person can run his/her life thinking "I'm not doing that, it might go wrong". Recently on the forum there have been reports of cracking good days out behind steam where everything has gone to plan. Life would be very dull if a person didn't take a risk now and again just because "something might go wrong"
    Of course, in saying that, It's your money, you can do exactly as you please.

    You are dead right Victor. How can a so called Rail enthusiast come out with such total junk. Of course, he isn't one. By the way, I have a yeast allergy and have just rejoined Camra.

    While delays may have played a part in their downfall, it wouldnt have been fines from NR/Railtrack as i think the company you're referring to was a promoter like Steam Dreams rather than an operator like WCRC.

    The promoter is at the end of the line and is contractually liable to the TOC under the train operating and hire contract.

    I stand my ground on contractual and sale of goods act issues, but this was force majeure on the day and NR could hardly be held at fault for the actions of a bunch of pikey scum!

    That shot at Bempton - blue sky - barsteward!! I was at the overbridge near Hunmanby and it as as black as a witches tit - after sixty five minutes of clear blue sunshine!?! Then diesel hauled out of Scarborough - as soon as I heard a diesel horn I was in the Jag and off to Beamish - could have been there much earlier if it had been confirmed as a tin can job!

    Still - Beamish was well worth its ten pound photo charter fee - superb lighting, and make you own scenarios - but Dishforth services at 22.30 no food except sarnies and machine coffee - eeyugh!!!

    yes it was the fine's as well that was there down fall but i am sure that each part pay a portion of the fine d.b.s. or w.c.r.c. the loco onwer's and the tour company it is capped how much they pay with the rest met by network rail ;
    all the best

    The problem with Fibre Optic Cables is they don't stop the Pikeys cutting them, thinking they are Copper, by the time they realise it's worthless to them the damage is already done.

    That seems very odd - delays to other services arent caused by the tour company so i cant see how they're liable, whether caused by pathing/infrastructure (NR) or equipment (WCRC/DBS). Refunds to tour passengers would seem much more of an issue. Can anyone confirm?
