Excellent! Glad you've cleared that up.

(If there was a "Best Post on NatPres" award, you'd get my vote).

So they've proved that they bend if you drop them, and now catch fire. What next, I wonder?

Funny you should mention that, as I understand it, at least 3 of the newer 70's (same batch ?) have been grounded with immediate effect.

Thank you for your kind (?!) words Gents...:yo:

Lesson learnt: Think before engaging fingers. Some things are best thought rather than said, dependent on one's level of knowledge of the subject in hand.

Doubtless I shall forget this lesson at somepoint in the future, of course...

It's not going well for GE is it? All those GMs into service without a hitch (more or less) and now three big moments (the drop, the freeze and the fire) with less than 20 locos delivered.

Comparing a 70 and 66 in the looks department is like comparing the Elephant Man to someone who's been mauled by a pack of rabid Wolves

Best looking Diesels are the Westerns, fact.

    A Thingy...
So a Class 70 has done its best to impersonate a Bulleid with a lagging fire on Southern territory by setting fire to itself? There is justice in this world after all! Seriously, it kind of proves that it might not have been a bad idea to have kept the Watercress Line open in its entirety as a diversionary route (as indeed it was back in the day). Although the single-track sections may have proved an issue, surely it would have been less of a delay than going down the Portsmouth Direct line then veering off at Fareham to get to Eastleigh?

... as would the lack of electrification and the lack of any locomotives able to haul modern electric units away from the juice rail :)

Seen elsewhere that another one has ignited. 70007 caught fire between Bramley & Basingstoke yesterday, probably on a similar working (Southampton bound) as it was ironically in the same area (give or take). States the damage was not as bad as 70018 though. Are they all now going to be withdrawn?

I think they should be, they pose a risk of unacceptable delays to other traffic on the network!

Perhaps their designers were so distressed at the ugliness of their product that they built in a self destruct mechanism?
