The last ex-Barry restoration on the SVR, Large Prairie 4150, is being undertaken largely under a canvas tent at Bewdley, so dont knock it per-se. It depends rather more on the skills and determination of the people involved.

    Re: L.m.s Crab 42859

Currently, at Sellindge 'Antwerp' is partly dismantled. The former gas producer boiler is off and detubed and almost ready for assessment-it's in a real state (no illusions there). Probably the fire box and the front tube plate will have to go over the hedge(being in a field there is one nearby!) -and the wrapper will need a new skirt all the way around. The frames are largely intact and inside the famous tent. Motion not quite as bad as Norman's but will need much attention. The tank was rotten as a pear as was the bunker and gone to scrap. Valve port faces will need work but the main bores are ok. Don't forget our colleagues the 68086 J94 group in the other tent making excellent progress. Sure conditions are not ideal at Sellindge but we achieve pretty reasonable results on the whole. Ask Embsay- Norman is a nice performer. We have also have been working on the two 5' guage TK3s mainly mothballing funnily enough. Additionally we have latterly been working on 37254s replacement bogies. The pacifics are a bit of a problem but work has started on GSN -the idea being to restore her as an unrebuilt MN. Ok we're not exactly spring chickens -but if we were brown bread- what would there be to worry about? The crab will hopefully arrive later in the year.

That's good to hear all is moving ahead. Not so good about Antwerp's condition, but I look forward to seeing the finished article on the Remembrance Line some day, along with the crab and spam can

In reply to ten-wheeler, And your point is?
Yes i used to be at Selinge , i stopped because when i was employed by the KESR, i could see a possible clash of interests so i decided to concentrate with The one that pays my wages, Richard Moffet who actualy is a very good friend understood and accepted my decision ,Plus on top of this i wanted to return to footplate duties which would take a lot of my free time

To restore the Crab will need more people to get involved unless more people have got involved that will make it 3 engines that need to be worked on, working in the open whilst its fine is ok, but in the cold and wet you grind to a holt .

4253, yes its in a tent, but when its not possible to work because its either too wet or cold, we have a back up loco in the shed to work on, the P class, and once 4253 is far enough advanced then she could be moved into the shed to be finished, but once you go from being in a cold enviroment with rain running down your back , been there done it! to working in a shed that is keeping you dry you tend to feel better about what you are doing and might stay to see it though

That I couldn't imagine anyone being so hypocritical as to publicly slag off a site as being hopeless because they were working in a tent, when they themselves were doing exactly the same thing at another site. So I assumed there must be two people around with the same name.

I have nothing to do with any of these places, but I could see you were really putting the boot in hard. This "really good friend" of yours doesn't need any enemies with people like you around him. Is he aware you knife him in the back publicly like this?

I'm afraid you don't sound like someone who knows much about what they are talking about. I wouldn't say such things about someone, because the preservation movement needs all kinds of participants, and they are welcome. But to denigrate another site and try to settle old scores like that is totally unacceptable.

    The 3rd Hughes crab

Hello, ones in the national collection, ones at east lancs, but what happened to the 3rd LMS crab?
I cannot find anything about it on the Internet. Does anyone know who owns this loco, what state it's in, any pictures, it's future plans ?!

    Re: The 3rd Hughes crab

There has been a significant amount of discussion regarding 42859 on this site before. I suggest you type '42859' into the search bar and select the threads that seem most relevant in the results.

Similarly, it's worth doing a search on any subject before publishing a new thread asking for info, as this site has very often already discussed things in which enthusiasts tend to be interested.

    Hope that helps!

    Re: The 3rd Hughes crab

Could you please differentiate between 'info' and 'chat'. NatPres is very good for picking up 'gen' - and equally good for picking up 24-carat speculation it's true, but I'm well aware that the loco has been discussed at some length on here in the past. It's easy enough to sift the wheat from the chaff with a critical eye.

P.S. I won't give you the link to the 42859 thread(s) as your post suggests that you have found them already.

    Re: The 3rd Hughes crab

I'd draw your attention to page 77 of this month's "Heritage Railway" magazine.... The editorial suggests there are no plans to restore the loco in the immediate future.

I read somewhere it needs a new copper firebox and that many of it's components we're robbed.
Given that.. It's probably an easier prospect to resurrect 48518 !.. At least with an 8f all the original LMS patterns exist in turkey.. If not the spares themselves.

    Re: The 3rd Hughes crab

Whilst I am unable to dispute what has been said in this editorial, I would urge caution in drawing any conclusion from what has been written there. Nothing that was written there was anything more than speculation and showed no indication of having actually spoken to the owners (regular occurence in this magazine). Indeed this forum may be more up to date in the recent reports on here of it having moved to Sellindge, as that wasn't mentioned at all in the editorial. I don't think anybody other than the owner knows what the plans are (if any) for this loco.

Alternative thread for the loco: http://railways.national-preservation.com/steam-traction/34635-l-m-s-crab-42859-a.html , Mods may wish to merge?
