So I've wasted my money buying the conspiracy theory books. These are now works of fiction then !

I guess if you have that kind of money 'floating' about then why not!

Not a project you would want to see 'go under' though.

OK I'll get my coat :flame::bolt:

It seems a serious proposal, i had to check the date though because i thought we were stuck on April 1st! Certainly the guy seems to have the dosh, so this story seems to have legs, as they say.

I recall a similar plan surfacing after the film was released in 1997 but nothing ever came of it.

    Welded rather than riveted ?
Wonder where they will hide the extra lifeboats that the original did not have.

I don't think the Chinese are capable of building a large passenger ship. Their build quality is not very good anyway & from what I've seen their fitting out would not be acceptable to the average cruise line.

Ouch. That seems a bit of an unfair generalisation (I don't know, I'm not in ships). 90% of the electric things in my house were made in China and they haven't killed anybody...

I recall the original cost several million quid. In 1912.
Gawd knows what it'll cost today!

As already mentioned modern safety regulations (SOLAS) just dont make this realistic - this page includes just some of the compromises that would be forced on it. I cant imagine a ship thats only 'in the style' of Titanic could justify the cost.

However, its interesting that he also happens to be launching a political career. If this was just a PR stunt its proved very succesful...

Titanic II set to sail in 2016 An Australian billionaire has announced plans to build a replica of the Titanic that will make its maiden voyage from England to New York in 2016.
Weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, Clive Palmer announced he has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II.

Palmer said in a statement: "It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems."

More than 1,500 people died in the sinking of the Titanic, which at the time was the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner.

If the build does go ahead will they invite J. Bruce Ismay's Grandson along as passenger of Honour?

The cynic in me says that this is more about publicity for his political aspirations.
