Interesting to read that the locos will be craned onto flat cars which will be used to take the loco through to York ! I would have thought that (1) the wagon would be too out-of-gauge for the British network routes and (b) the height of loco on a flat car would be too high for network limits.

Is this another case of poor reporting or do the museum staff know something we don't ?

    What do you think?

In case you're still uncertain, here's another paragraph from the same piece.

    "
Transportation costs will be paid by the British museum for the exhibit celebrating the steam engine speed record of 126 mph set in 1938 by an A4 called Mallard. Organizers are discussing using one of the A4s in an attempt to break the old record.

I think personally, that the flat cars will be used for transportation purposes up to the point of unloading on British shores.
Then they will be left in storage until the return trip.

Was at a talk given by Steve Davies of the NRM the other week and one point was made by him then at all movement costs have been covered either by sponsorship or services given freely.

This part suggests that they're using British flatbeds, otherwise what's the point of this sentence:
The flatbed cars are lower than American flatbeds because many old rail bridges in England are lower than their counterparts in America, explained Frank.

Perhaps they're relying on the A4's wedge shape to enable it to force its way under these old bridges?!

To be honest I was just thinking that this was a very good bit of journalism and much better than some of our Bristish newspaper's efforts on the past!

I find it interesting that it moved under its own power once on US soil - assuming the article is correct.

wouldn't that knacker an A4 ? just a quote about when Mallard did it Shortly after the attainment of this record speed, Mallard suffered an overheated middle big end and had to limp back to Peterborough after setting the record.

Alterations made in the BR period (gleaned I believe from knowledge on one of the other big four) virtually eliminated this particular problem, so not neccesarily. My money's on it not happening though!

A4 Loco owners would be mad to try get a loco to 126mph

The report is wrong and the 126MPH is not under threat, only a ton is slightly possible, even if you wanted to go for Mallards record, you'll find charter stock is limited to 100MPH and even loco hauled MKIII's are not allowed over 110MPH.

but a ton with anything other then Tornado let alone an A4 would be difficult to see happening.

I quite agree. I think it is a bit of dodgy reporting on our American cousins' part. I was just giving you a bit of background info :)
