    Just stumbled across this;

Cock O' The North - Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust

Interestingly their idea of membership is to show a blank donation form, no information of costs/benefits of membership...
And you'll never believe it, but I also discovered a facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Doncaster-P2-Locomotive-Trust-Cock-O-The-North/193996747368324

Good luck to them, but with the A1 Trust still to learn whether a P2 can be operated on the mainline I'm not sure how successful this is going to be.

Apparently there is news in the A1ST communication Cord this month of the P2... Anyone aware if this is true?

Yes - early stages of the Deltarail program. They're using data from tests done on Tornado to create a P2 model to see if the modified V2 bogie would be sufficient along with the same notable changes as on the new A1. It was a very interesting read.

Futher to the above .... they are currently validating the Deltarail simulation of Tornado against actual data gathered from on-board sensors fitted to the loco during her proving runs. Once the simulation matches the real-time data by tweeking the various parameters then the modelling of the P2 chassis can begin.

Having had a decco at their FB page I am surprised they are photographing the drawings when suitable scanners are available that would give a much better copy...

hmm, sounds interesting, have reservations as to weather there is a market for it, but lets hope they do well.

I'm pretty much the same. One thing I do not like though is that they are to number it 2001.They state that:
"Our aim is to recreate one of the great missing legends of the steam railway age, the magnificent and iconic "Cock O' The North".

But in my mind 2001 was iconic in its semi-streamlined form, not with the A4 nose. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who's vision of 2001 is the same.

IIRC they were going to build the next in the series 2007 originally, whereas the A1 trust were looking to build a 2001 one look-a-like? What nonsense - it's the other way around.

Fair enough but the Doncaster group are saying they want to recreate 2001 because it was iconic, yet are building it in the form it wasn't as iconic in.

Yeah - I'm agreeing with you but also spouting bllx. It's the A1 trust who are looking to build 2007, as per Tornado being the next in line. :embarassed:

The A4 front is is more representative of the P2s as a class, though. Even though I personally prefer 2001's original front end, I think that recreating the A4 front end would fill a bigger historical gap, if you see what I mean. Still, only time will tell whether either, both, or neither of these schemes will succeed.

It's arguable that unless a P2 is recreated exactly as built by the LNER then no historical gap use being filled at all. I want to see one built nonetheless and preferably not one with a wedge nose.

For anyone so inclined, you can download and view the DP2LT's general arrangement CAD drawing for their frames, here.

Spamcan, how do you view Tornado in that respect - the A1 was modified to be 13ft instead of 13ft 1in above the rails, by altering the cab roof and other components to bring her down in height. Boiler all welded steel derivative with modifications for internal streamlining of passages, many more besides. Does Tornado fulfill your view of filling an historical gap?

I ask out of curiosity, rather than to denigrate, which is not my intention in any way.

Interesting, why the plate overlap behind the cylinders? The original A1's had two piece frames because of post-war economies but 60163 has one-piece frames because they can now be produced. Is there any advantage to having a join like this today?

You could argue that no new-build will be a replica because of all modern materials used, so what are the most important criteria, keeping the power to weight ratio the same as the originals? Tornado was always marketed as the 50th member of the class, not a replica, which allowed the builders quite a lot of "wriggle room" for improvements.

I had the same thought - weren't the 'frame extensions' due to the maximum length of plate then readily available? Just looks like trouble in waiting to me.

Yes, you don't have to compensate by increasing the width of cross-stretchers, inside cylinders and buffer beam brackets, or reducing the widths of the outside cylinders from the dimensions shown on the original drawings.

I don't see anyone complaining about the Saint, 6880 or 4709 with their extension frames.

But they aren't new builds, they have inherited their frames. The P2 mob have the chance to improve on the design for the sake of altering a few drawings, which will probably have to be redrawn in order to metricate them and render them suitable for CADCAM production methods etc

6880 has completely new frames and on 4709 the main frames are new, with secondhand extension frames.
