Walking through the shed last week it was a hive of activity with volunteers and staff all over the engine on a 7-days-a-week basis working extremely hard to have it steaming next month :) The last time I saw it, a myriad of pipes were being installed onto the engine, which I am told are part of an air braking system for the engine, a feature which has had to be made from new in preservation, as I believe the original braking system was hair-raisingly inadequate!

They were beading the tubes over a week back, so I'd expect a hydraulic test any time.

Well, it's hoped to debut it at the Feb gala and of course it needs to be completed soon because 44767 is in need of some boiler work before it leaves for the NNR

The insurance inspector is booked in this coming week for the hydraulic test.

The mechanical side of the locomotive is complete apart from the valves and pistons as we are awaiting delivery of the valve/ piston rings.

The tender has been complete for a number of months now and just requires piping up to the locomotive.

The air braking pipe work, vacuum and steam heat pipe work is 90% complete.

The boiler and firebox cladding is complete and off site for painting.

The target is to have 6046 running for the steam gala at the end of February.

    Regards

    Chris

Yesterday 6046 successfully passed its hydraulic test in the presence of the insurance inspector so we are now working around the clock to get the locomotive ready for its steam test.

    Regards

    Chris

It was in the shed at Saturday's steam gala - substantially complete but lacking many bits and pieces such as cladding. Still looked a way off line use.

I've seen pictures of her in steam, all cladding off as you'd expect for a first steam test.

    I've compiled a quick summary of 6046 History, but was wondering if anyone on here knows more than what I've learnt of the internet;

If anyone can provide dates for the events of her lifetime, and any other pieces feel free to add. I have reports she spent time in Poland but can't find exact details for this so don't know if this is true or not.

Might be worth mentioning that it was dismantled presumably at Tyseley. I don't believe it ever "looked" like a loco as such on arrival at the CVR, rather a kit of parts.

United States Army Transport Corps Locomotives by R. Tourret identifies 6046 as being amongst locomotives shipped into Europe directly from the USA a route estblished from the middle of 1945 and further notes 6046 as being amongst locomotives that were known to have worked on the SNCF. Tourret further notes that once their use on the SNCF came to an end, locomotives were gathered at a dump at Louvain, the breaking up of which started in Feb 1946 and continued into 1947. Curiously of locomotives noted by Tourret to have been transfered to Hungary, 6046 is not listed, but clearly at some point in time that transfer took place.

The view from the Cheddleton yard webcam right now looks quite promising

(would post the link but my browser and this website don't like each other for some reason)

It looks as though the compressor is missing on the front. It can be got around though as proved by 5197 at I think, Merehead Quarry.
