I accept the apology with the good grace with which it was given. In turning the page on this minor misunderstanding between Gav and myself may I remind readers that I was only reporting what an attendee said at our AGM about 82045.

Thats a very interesting point actually. One which 82045, 45551, 72010, 4709 will all have to overcome. Where as Beachy head, 6880, 2999 have the advantage of having this large part of the puzzle. 1014 is different tho as it has a firebox but will need a new barrel.

On the subject of 82045's boiler, will that be done at SVR? (with some parts being contracted out to say SDR engineering) and how much is it expecting to cost?

    Cheers Gavin

My understanding is that the copper for the firebox, or since it's theft the cost, are already in the 82045 Trust account.

I am sure someone more involved with construction, in particular the boiler phase of construction will confirm.

My understanding is that the boiler will be constructed at the SVR as a contract job. I am sure some of the excellent volunteer engineering members of 82045 will be involved in some way. There does not seem much that they are not capable of turning their skills to !

I have heard several estimates for expected costs, but as we all know, prices are increasing all the time and I guess a final estimate will be needed once 82045 reaches this point.

First things first - wheels and motion.

Interesting post. My approach to this need to maintain or even improve fundraising whilst on the boiler section of the construction would be to, at least to the public, advertise it in 'bite size chunks' rather than just 'the boiler' - sponsor a tube, sponsor a stay, sponsor a superheater element. Help us raise £50,000 for the first section of barrel. Help us raise £55,000 for the second. Help us raise £65,000 for the firebox construction. Help us raise £35,000 for the tubeplate. Split it down at least on paper for the enthusiast public to see. The other thing of course (and this is something the 82045 gang excel in already) is regular updates!

Perhaps Gav should make a donation to the 82045 fund by way of penance!

"Certainly is, son, and I helped to build it!"

I like that; the latest update always cheers me up but I think that future quote will be said several times and probably will relate to more than just one 82xxx!

Sounds like an excellent idea to me Gav! We've got two GW sets (one being the SV Limited set). So we'll pop the Grange on one of those with 82045 and Beachy head on a Mk1 set each? Sound, see you there haha!

Yes, I'd buy a ticket! I'm also looking forward to seeing 2807 and 2857 together in steam. Maybe sometime?!

When I last saw the frames they were still bolted to the stretchers, smokebox etc. At what point does the trust plan to place the first rivet ? Surely this work must be completed before the cylinders, and other items can be mounted on the frames. Otherwise good progress appears to being made - congratulations to all concerned.

It had been tentatively hoped that the chassis could have been moved into the boilershop last winter for the riveting to take place but this did not prove possible. The riveting does need to be done before the cylinders can be mounted and plans are being formulated for this to happen. Keep an eye on our website news pages for up to date information. I take your point regards rivets en-mass however the more observant may notice that a few of the cold-set rivets are already in place securing some of the lifting point doublers.

glos should have no real need for concern as much other work is continuing including manufacture of a fixture in preparation to accurately grind the lubrication slots in the manganese faces of the horn liners. Now the seemingly endless task of machining the horn liners has been finished machining work has now started on the brake hanger brackets.
Another less glamourous task has been the manufacture of chassis stands to allow the frames to be raised to permit fitting of the spring brackets to the lower edge of the frames.
To the casual observer it may seem little headway is being made but I will assure them that all these tasks involving fairly small components take time but are very necessary to move 82045 towards completion.

I think most casual observers would see that tremendous headway has been made!

The Bridgnorth Station Gala taking place over the weekend of 16th and 17th June should provide an opportunity to view and review progress on 82045, and possibly "Catch-Me-Who-Can", Bridgnorth's other new-build, which is progressing towards being able to move around under its own power.

    See this link: http://www.bridgnorthstation.co.uk/events.html

Saturday 16th June has timetable "C" in operation, which gives a frequent service, if you feel the need to stop off along the way during the day.
