Those HC 0-6-0's have always been a personal favourite of mine, but the return of that example from Fiji had escaped my attention as well.

When out in Oz about 10 years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Menzies Creek museum at the Puffing Billy, on one of the 3 or 4 days a year when they steamed their ex Macknade Mill (I think) loco. The NG museum at Illawarra also has a superbly restored example.

Although they did come in various sizes, the last locos delivered to Fiji and Oz were pretty sizeable locos on 2ft particularly for their relatively short fixed wheelbase. From video I've seen of them in action, the ride could be a bit "lively" to put it mildly! Certainly I think one of the Fowler 0-6-2 tender locos would be a more practical passenger hauling proposition.

There was a very good book "The last of the Hudswell's" published on the final survivors running in Queensland and their final haulage exploits make interesting reading. I think around 150 loaded cane bins was the eventual record! (And all controlled with just the loco brakes!)

Anyway, I look forward to seeing the 0-4-0 working at Statfold in due course.

With this, the ex Java fleet and Isibutu, what Statfold really need now is a rake of sugar cane wagons.
Not so sure of the practicality of growing an appropriate crop to fill them however....!!

...except of course, contrary to popular opinion, the Rampton collection is not rusting away and is all being worked on slowly. This includes the two Hudswell Clarkes which have a definite family resemblance to the example at Statfold, though if I remember correctly one or both require new boilers - certainly I have been offered the 'remains' of San Justo's boiler in conjunction with a potential study into the quality and composition of modern and non-modern (for want of a better term) boiler steel.

As a matter of interest, is anyone able to give a list of locos at Statfold currently awaiting their turn in the workshops (besides the HC) ?

Could you give us any details of the work in progress, Charlie?

All are listed in the current Statfold Guide Book & Stock List (+ latest supplement) available at Enthusiasts' Days.

I will pull together a list based on these and post it here over the weekend.

As promised in my previous post, here are the details of the seven narrow gauge steam locos in the Statfold collection which are awaiting or currently undergoing restoration.

This information is taken from the current edition of the Statfold Barn Railway Guidebook & Stock List and supplements up to the June 2012 edition.

They are listed in (my recollection of) their order of arrival at Statfold, earliest first.

Name/Number Wheel Aggt Builder Works Number Build Date

    Tjepper (Ceper Baru) No.5 0-4-4-0T Jung 2279 1914

Hope that this is of some help.

    Regards,

    Mark

Marchlyn and Sybil Mary are currently both in the workshops.

We aim to have marchlyn ready for our September enthusiast day and Sybil Mary ready early next year
