That is correct Dan about the chassis , and has been restored with a new tender tank.

Originally for 499, it will run with 506 for the time being when 506 enters traffic later in the year while 506,s tender is being restored.

    Regards

I don't want to rain on the party, but please don't expect 506 in service this year. If it happens it will be bonus. There is a lot still to do.

I stand corrected. Must admit I knew 17 was to be painted in NSE but didn't realise that it had already been completed and in original spec too. In my opinion, the better spec.

I remember the day when 506 was launched into MHR traffic along with 34105. A great day and it looked resplendant in Olive Green. Don't care what livery it now appears in (as long as it's authentic) nor if it returns at the end of 2012 or during the early part of 2013, it will just be good to have it back.

Wasn't the chassis used at Eastleigh as a diesel test bed or similar?
Didn't mean to put any pressure on regarding 506, just pleased that good progress is being made. Spring 2013 is fine, can meet the T9 again!

Ironic with your user name! I think it was a Hampshire Unit (& similar units) engine test bed. Might have to look through some old SR's.

Sir, I have it on extremely good authority, and as a Urie member, that 506 WILL be in traffic before the end of the year, at the very least that is what they are aiming for anyway. The only fly in the ointment as I see it is the painting as at the present time the paint shop is full.

    Best regards

That is good news. I liked her in Southern black, my first published photo was of 506, also used as a postcard by the Mid Hants for a while

It's good to hear 506 could be back before the end of the year. One of my favourites of the MHR fleet. I have great memories of an awesome run we had with her over the Alps one evening after an AGM in the days when members used to get a free run over the line after the meeting. I don't know who was driving but the noise from 506 was something else! A stunning run which even brought the locals out of their houses and into their back gardens to see what was going on. Never experienced anything like it since.

    Chris,

Ascerting it WILL be in service is very bold regardless of who gave you that information. I don't think it is achievable to get 506 into service this year, regretably. There is more than 6 months work in the boiler (though that is progressing very well at present). The wheel sets need turning and the axleboxes will want re-mettalling. The frame repair needs completing and the alignment adjusting. The cylinders and valves need boring. Painting the loco is the very least of our concerns.

She should be heading to the MHR for a few adjustments and running-in to make her debut in traffic at the September Maunsell Gala:

Please could someone confirm - According to the MHR loco roster, 31806 still faces Alton. Did I imagine things, or did someone say that after visiting Didcot, 31806 arrived back at Ropley facing Alresford?

    Thanks

I heard that the U boat will face Alresford after return form the SVR gala/charters in Sept/October. Be interesting to see which way Cheltenham faces, I am assuming (always dangerous) that it too will be Country facing to match Lord Nelson

    Your assumptions are correct, Sir!

I'm on the photo charter in November, and that is what has been stated.

As an ERPS member, a discussion over the next livery is taking place within the society. There does seem to be a feeling that SR Maunsell green stands out from BR dark green or black.

    Cheers, Neil

PS Please don't get too excited, it's a coat of paint to stop the steel rusting!

Perhaps of greater importance than the colour of the paint, are there any plans to run 828 on the main line when its overhaul is complete?
