The Duchess this morning at Milford, LINK.

I also took one of "Tornado" ten minutes later at the same spot, interesting exhaust comparison.

Interesting comment on this youtube video - "Came across some work going on at Scarborough Bridge over the River Ouse today. Passers by wondering why legs and boots were dangling from under the bridge. Was told that Network rail were monitoring how the bridge was when heavy steam and loco hauled trains were going over it"

Lovely shots, Stuart. Yes, Tornado has continued in the same way that Blue Peter did; oftentimes there's very little visible exhaust compared to other locomotives. I've read many comments over the years about this topic.

Green Giants at York 30 June 2012

The main line steam schedules provided a 'golden hour' at York when Peppercorn A1 Pacific No 60163 Tornado would pause on its journey south with a Cathedrals Express from Durham, closely followed by Stanier Pacific No 46233 Duchess of Sutherland returning towards Tyseley after a Vintage Trains day out in Scarborough.

In the event, the Duchess was early, bringing its packed 12 coach train up the down Scarborough line into Platform 5. In the weird weather we are having, it was full dull at one moment, then glorious sunshine fell on the magnificent machine, then more dull as she set off on time.

Tornado was late leaving Durham and even later arriving at York, but she too had moments of beautiful sunshine, highlighting her elegant lines against an almost black sky just before she stormed away with her 14 coaches, remaining audible for many minutes as she strove to make up time.

A golden hour indeed, of two top line express steam engines, with their Brunswick green livery looking its best in the sunshine

    Scarborough Flyer with 46233 - 30/6/2012

Another couple of shots of 46233 approaching Belper. (A substantial pair of stepladders was essential to secure these!)
Pity the sun dipped momentarily at the critical moment, but still far better weather than was forecast by our friends at the BBC. I had set out that morning quite expecting torrential downpours!
Doesn't 46233 look superb in BR green!! Took me back to the days when I used to see the Coronations climbing out of Preston, one after another, on the 'Caledonian', the 'Royal Scot', the Glasgow-Birmingam and the Perth-Euston .... albeit generally not in quite so immaculate condition.

Yes, she does look superb! And many thanks to the team at PRCLT for all their hard work, and giving us the opportunity to once again enjoy the wonderful sight and sound of a Duchess doing what she was built for.
