The K4 took 8 coaches over Druimuachdar for the SRPS a few years ago in quite foul weather conditions and it didn't appear to have to try too hard. Given reasonable coal it would be hard to see the route presenting the engine with much of a task. A variation in the load to be taken would be the point of greatest interest and might just give the engine a chance to shine. Pity it has not yet been seen in the West Country as yet but that would be a long way from home however taking on the challenge of Hemerdon, Rattery and Dainton would bring the engine much greater exposure to both enthusiasts and general public. Thinking back to the North bound S&C trip, if I remember correctly it was the full Pullman set plus an Ethel with the extra hurdle of bad coal. The Mallerstang slack was in place at that time but some of the work done on the trips South was very good.

That's also my ambition, and I intend to do an SRPS 'Forth Circle' one day to connect my Polmont-Mallaig strech with the rest of the network. Ideally, I would also like to do a Penzance-Bristol trip just for completeness' sake. However, I need to fill in the Stirling-Perth 'gap' to get Inverness on stream, and that is currently proving a little difficult. However, the compositon of one my roundabout routes to Mallaig is:

    1. Royal Duchy (2010) (70013, 44871)
    2. Various trips from Bristol covering the distance to Newton Abbot (2007-2010) (6024, 70013, 44871).
    3. The Merchant Venturer; Waterloo-Bristol via West London Extension (2009) (35028)
    4. The Doric Olympian; Crewe-Kensington Olympia via West London Extension (2010) (46201)
    5. The Royal Scot; Crewe-Carlisle (2009) (46233)
    6. The Royal Scot; Carlisle-Stirling (2010) (46233)
    7. MISSING SECTION Linlithgow-Alloa-Stirling-Falkirk High-Polmont-Linlithgow
    8. The West Highlander; Polmont-Fort William (2011) (45231, 61994)
    9. The Jacobite (2006) (45407 as '45157')

All the same, I have booked the SRPS Inverness trip, and am looking forward to it immensely.

I understand from face book correspondants that No 9 has been out in the fresh air at Crewe, with partial stream line casing now fitted....

Shall the A4 be ready for the Crewe Pool in a few weeks?

Or even will the A4 be ready for the Crewe pool in a few weeks?

The answer to both questions is probably not.

No I do not currently volunteer
I don't think anything is actually 'designated', only when the locos are actually available are plans pencilled in as to what is going to run when.

Just passed Crewe station and 60009 was in the yard fully painted with the late crest but not in steam.

Passed Crewe today on the train, and saw 60009 in steam at the heritage centre! Good to see her back!

Maybe it's having the standard "wet fart" LNER whistle fitted that 4771 and formerly 4472 carried ;)
