There is seldom the opportunity on the national network to run at maximum permitted speeds for any length of time because of pathing, signal checks etc. However the ECML seems the place most likely to offer the chance.

I can give two examples. The first is St Neots to Great Ponton on the Coronation with Tornado (18/11/10) - that's 50 miles. But of arguably greater surprise (because of traffic density) is the summit at Roundwood to just before Earlsfield with Clan Line on the End of Southern Steam anniversary trip on 9/7/12 - also about 50 miles. Has there been longer?

I'd imagine 5043 on the return Bristolian probably has it by some distance, unless im mistaken after hitting 70 after Bristol Parkway, it didn't slow to any great extent until Reading.

I'd of thought that in recent times the Bristolian would be hard to beat. Digressing slightly from the topic and not meaning to hijack the thread - Could Bittern/Dominion theoretically run from London to Edinburgh without having to stop for water with the second tender? Or is the coaling capacity the biggest issue?

Mods feel free to start a new Topic if this is wondering to far off the original thread.

    Thanks

What about on the Top-gear race to the North with Tornado, did they sustain 70mph for long periods ?

Probably the best combination would be 60163 with Bitterns second tender. (wasn't it design to also work with it ?)

Didnt 6024 do a mega run with its container wagon loaded with 7100 gallons over 2 water tanks ??.

Forgot that one. It was 70+ from Brookmans Park to outside Grantham but there were three short spells sub 70. Bristolian - as said. That may be the record. So nothing on WCML then?

Did that beat the Bristolian for distance?

I think when 4472 was proposed for another non stop some time ago, opinion was it would need 3 tenders, 60163 would be a double edged sword as it may carry enough water to only need two, but it may need a Coal stop instead then, remember on the Top Gear Race, it needed more coal at Tyne Yard.

Not quite sure, I went along for the day itself rather than calculations etc but here's the info for "The Talisman" with 6233 back in 2005! I can't believe it was that long ago, time flies and all that....

Didn't that happen last year with 4464 when she was disguised as 4492 where there were problems with water at Grantham and York which meant that Bittern went from Kings Cross to Tyne Yard without water. I remember Roland Kennington sayinmg something along these lines last year.
