Do the Royals have a track atlas they are starting to fill in for steam mileage now ?, Charles won't be happy when he's told he can't claim the Cambrian ;)

I'm sure if any Royal had a track atlas it would be Charles. Good on him if he has

I was beginning to wonder when Tornado would make her way northwards for the Elizabethan and thought i'd not seen any paths on UK Steam.</p>

Yes I am an active volunteer
Given that the Royal Train is on the A1 Steam website is there any chance of timings appearing - or is it still considered a security risk [get G4S on board]

Security is alway tight, but there are leaks, but usually at the last minute.

I see that Gresley9 has praised the journalist for getting the facts right, if it's straight from the A1 site then it doesn't need a journalist at all.

Yes, this is rather lazy reporting as it's copied straight from the A1 site as you say but attriuted to "staff reporter". Thought it must be too good to be true when I read campainr's post below.

Oh well I guess I'm just too gullible!

Regarding timings royal visits generally seem to start at 10am. So by finding out where Tornado is joining the train and finding a suitable path you can usually have a good guess - possibly York?

But then looking at HRH's engagements for Monday:

    Monday 23rd July 2012

The Prince of Wales, Patron, Abbeyfield, will meet residents and staff during a visit to Abbeyfield House, 17 Dial Place, Warkworth, Northumberland NE65 0UR.

The Prince of Wales will meet volunteers and local artists at the Pride of Northumbria Community Shop, 80 Queen Street, Amble, Northumberland NE65 0DD.

The Prince of Wales will meet community groups, young performers and local fisherman, Queen Street, Amble, Northumberland NE65 0DD.

The Prince of Wales will meet blacksmith Stephen Lunn and view examples of his work during a visit to JS Lunn & Sons, The Forge, Red Row, Northumberland NE61 5AU.

The Prince of Wales will view a demonstration of the Olympic Games security air support plans and receive operational briefing during a visit to RAF Boulmer, Alnwick, NE66 3JF.

The Prince of Wales will view the farmhouse kitchen where “The Proof of the Pudding” products are made, meet family members, local shopkeepers and other supporters during a visit to Heckley High House, Alnwick, Northumberland NE66 2LQ.

The Prince of Wales will visit Auckland Castle, tour the chapel and view the Zurbaran paintings, which were recently saved for the nation by the philanthropist, Jonathan Ruffer. The Prince will be accompanied by the new Bishop of Durham The Right Reverend Justin Welby, Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, DL14 7NR.

Usually these are in the wrong order for security reasons. However we can see he spends most of his day around Alnmouth/Alnwick and is a guest a Alnwick Castle according to the press release, so must start his day at Auckland Castle - conveniently close to Bishop Auckland station. So perhaps the steam leg is Darlington - Alnmouth?

I hope I haven't said too much there but it doesn't take a genius to work it out from the info available to the public.

My new Steam Railway magazine has just arrived in the post and this Royal duty is featured on Page 7.

In a quote, Tornado chair Mark Allatt suggests Durham is the place to be around midday Monday.

In that case Durham is not the place to be around midday Monday!

Not gullible at all. I would have thought exactly the same as you. Ever the optimist.

All that information is already in the public domain so I'm sure you haven't said too much. Like you say, from here it's just a case of joining the dots.

Would you prefer the "staff reporter" to have embellished the press release with a few made up facts, misconceptions and references to "puffers" etc as we so often see in the press?

I actually admire tha fact that the reporter has reported on facts as shown in the official website--not many of his readers will have seen that. At least the facts are correct; we see so many childish reports made up by people who have no clue and they end up embarrassing to read.

The whole point is there is no reporter, it is just a straightforward copy and paste of the "latest news" page from the A1 website. If they're going to do that they should acknowledge it and not claim it as their own. That was the point I was making, which I had hoped would have been clear to those reading my post !

Of course I wouldn't have wanted embellishments of the kind Malc describes. I was just lulled into thinking that some decent railway knowledge had crept into the world of newspaper journalism. Unfortunately I was sadly misguided.

Or put the post codes in auto route with a guess at the start and finish and then get it to optimise the route.. Simple...

Ok, got you. Yes it would be appropriate to say where his work came from. It would still look good. Sorry I didn't quite interpret your words correctly. One of the biggest traps for any reporter is to call the engine 'a steam train'. Urhh.. basic which gets me every time !!! Pete

Ever the pedant, I would have expected any reporter to refer to "The Prince of Wales' first visit" and not to The Prince of Wales's first visit"!
