The last I heard, they were going to do a full re-tube, so I presume this is still underway. I stand to be corrected, though...

Passed its hydraulic test a couple of weeks ago, superheaters now going in.

Website for the trust seems a bit slow to update, obviously busy...

Hopefully running for gala at end of month.

As has been noted above, a full small re-tube has been carried out. On an A4 doing the actual re-tube is probably the easiest part of the task. Quite a bit of the smokebox needs dismantling to gain access, followed by the Kylchap. Then all the superheater elements need removing. These are, unfortunately of the Robinson type and not the more universal Melesco type so the ends have to be cut off and the bits cut out of the header. New ends then have to be welded onto the elements and these are then expanded into the header. When all this is done, the, Kylchap, smokebox and streamlining can be rebuilt.
A return to steam is still a couple of weeks away.

No just an accurate assessment of the situation after 60007 failed its test run at the NYMR today with injector troubles, I am informed.

But I'm not sure that makes her "one permanent cripple".

Oakfield's choice of words was probably a little unfortunate, but he has a point, Sir Nigel doesn't seem to have had much luck in recent years.

    Re: Crewe overhauls - 60009

Well Ralph, In the past three years she has hardly earned any revenue as she lost 2010 with a partial re tube , 2011 wand the first half of 2012 with firebox repairs, both of which problems.can trace their roots back to the last overhaul.

Having returned her to service for the NYMR Olympic torch train and the SNGLPT members day she has been out of traffic for a solid month and on today's test run she developed injector problems, again this has been an ongoing issue on and off, since the last overhaul.

The business plans for funding the next overhaul must now be in tatters as they anticipated a revenue stream of £80k per year for each of the 10 years from the last overhaul to the next to cover running costs and put enough in the kitty for the overhaul.

If that tale of woe does not qualify the loco in the past 3 years as a permanent cripple I don't know what does.

Anyway, on a much more positive note, congratulations to J C and Crewe for a speedy overhaul on 60009.

    Re: Crewe overhauls - 60009

I'd suggest that the reason why 60007 is having some problems at the moment is that over the years it has done a lot more work than either of its two more pampered classmates. I think it is generally accepted that the A4s were withdrawn from BR with plenty of life left in them, but that residual life has gradually been used up and that is what is being manifested in 60007, which I think has required far more extensive boiler repairs than the other two have to date.

Interesting and novel theory! A long way from realit5y though.

The problems all date back to certain decisions made during the last major overhaul. Beyond that I will go no further.

    Crewe overhauls - 60009

61254 : I'd also like to see how you can justify that No. 7 has done a lot more work over the years than No. 9? Bittern, yes, has spent a lot of time out of service between overhauls. But No. 60009 has been pretty much constant service, out for a few years for an overhaul, and back in to service straight after?

In fact, I'm sure No. 9 currently holds the highest accumulative milage for any of it's class. Sure, you can begin to argue that No. 7 spends a lot of her time climbing hills at NYMR during preservation- but No. 9 has had her fair share too - Torbay's, highland mainline etc...

    Re: Crewe overhauls - 60009

60007 was one of the earliest locos to return to the main line, well before 60009, and I believe tha for a long time it did a lot more mileage than 60009 , which largely confined to Scotland. More recently 60007 has done lot more preserved line running, not just at the NYMR but also at the ELR and MHR. If someone had an accurate figure for the accummulatede mileage in preservation it would make an interesting comparison.

That figure is available on the locos website.
