I caught up with 34067 (and fellow Nat Pres user KristianGWR) at Crofton today, and managed to get this footage. Tangmere has always been a favourite of mine, and I have never heard her sound so good. It easily tops her run on the Swanage Belle the other week, and her slog over Evershot the other week. Tangmere was certainly flying along up Savernake - I worked out the speed at camera 1 to be 64mph (at 25 frames/second).

The link to the video is here: 34067 - The West Somerset Express 21-07-12 - YouTube

Wonderfully noisy shots! Many thanks for posting.

Only a personal preference, but I'd have enjoyed it even more if the first shot was framed with the track lower down, ie, Tangmere to pass the camera without cutting off the smoke as it got very near. Then cut to the second shot a little later so Tangy was already in view, ie. a more natural cut from the first. Only how I like to view things though, still lovely videos.

    Cheers,

    Bryan

I was at Theale as well, arrived there at 21.55 expecting to see it in the loop, but not so. Was informed by another chap that is was about an hour late. Further news filtered through on it's progress & that it would not be stopping for water. Didn't notice at the time there was no fire engine parked there. As mentioned above, hammered through Theale at 22.20.
Any reason for no water stop? Or was it deemed uneccessary?
Have to say, I think it is the fastest I've seen a Bulleid move since the mid 60's at Basingstoke or Hook.

The tanker left Woodborough to refill and came back to fill Tangmere to the brim.
I guess there was more slack in the paths on the B&H than after Reading.

What I saw & have read, it sounded like a very good day out, made better by no box assistance on the WSR. Omitting the Theale water stop would of made a near right time arrival at London.

Leave it out will ya guys.

I'm trying to write my book on Owls, and everytime I come here for a break and see a new sequence of Tangy roaring along it makes me all misty eyed. And I have to go back to 1967 to check out the runs I had behind an even noisier Flat Top. 34102. To live it all again.

It's bu..ering up me writing too. The bit on Short-Eared Owl voices now reads, "In winter makes a Kee-oow call as a prelude to aggression in defending it's territory. In summer, especially June and July make a noise like a Boeing 707 taking off, especially when running up hill, or near to Fleet in Hampshire at the 100 mph mark".

That's rubbish for me book. Everyone knows you don't see Short-Eared Owls in Fleet in mid summer.

    Cheers,

    Bryan

PS. Two more wonderful sequences of Tangy.
