A 14 coach load confirmed then.... This should mean some hard work up the banks.

From SWRG. ''67020/71000 passed Filton Abbey Wood at 11.14 towards Bristol Parkway''.

If 67020 and 71000 entered Bristol with 71000 smokebox first ,why would they head north to Bristol Parkway?
If 71000 need to be turned, why not turn it on the Dr.Days triangle? <BJ>

Why don't you like the sound of it? Being diesel hauled means there may well be no water stop/s required and therefore arrival at Bristol will be quicker.

    t0727p.htm

And looking at the timings, no water stop so there is a meathod to the madness of being diesel hauled even though you don't like the sound of it!

The usual reason for steam to be 'piloted' is so that the loco can be in light steam, and therefore not have to make any water stops.
I find it very odd that the term 'dragged' is used so often, which implies that the dragee? is unable to move itself, since moving steam locos has to be done with steam available, the 'unable to move itself' does not apply.
OK so if the rods are off it's a different matter.

Oh I now see that my post has been gazumped.

Absolutely, and the climb to Hemerdon starts very soon after leaving Plymouth doesn't it, so a Herculean effort from both sets of crews will be required with that load no doubt. Feel sorry for the Firemen in this heat, though it should be a few degrees cooler tomorrow hopefully.

Yes, I can see the sense of it, I just felt a little uneasy reading that given the problems 71000 has had previously.

How commn a practice is it for steam locos to get hauled LE by diesels to be in position for railtours ?

Whenever the operator (DBS/WCR) see fit. This can vary depending on the circumstances involved obviously.

I think you'll find it's a "figure of speech" in this context Ralph. By the way, "dragee" isn't a word, as I presume you guessed by your use of the "?"

Load 14 hard work? That's the same as 60163 took from Edinburgh to King's Cross on Wednesday and spent most of the time running at 75mph. Ok, the South Devon banks are a bit hillier than the ECML, but the locos will only be hauling 7 coaches each. Sorry, but the thought of the 2 most powerful steam locos on the mainline on this train leaves me cold.

Is this the first time the last 2 express steam locomotives built to run in the UK have double-headed a train together?

Indeed you could probably attach another 4 coaches and there wouldn't be a problem I'm sure if earl can get 9 over the banks so can duke and tornado so I agree this isn't gonna be pushed to the max hardwork however this is still a exciting prospect indeed looking forward to this tomorrow
