The overhaul has already started. The boiler may already be with Ian Riley. The frames have been stripped at the moment.

5025 had a spell running as 45124 (I think) for a tv series being filmed on the Strathspey in the early 1990s (Dr Finlayson's Casebook??) and had 'British Railways' on the tender and appropriate numerals on the cab. Other than that I don't think she's ever ran in anything but LMS livery since preservation.

Does 44767 have a 1968 pedigree? I thought it was withdrawn in 1967.
Out of interest, how many of the "1968 pedigree" preserved Black Fives have some particular feature/achievement to make them particularly worthy of preservation? I have come up with:-
    44871, 45110: worked the 15 Guinea special
45212: last steam loco to work a regular train (but see earlier in this thread)
45025: Oldest Black Five on BR's books in 1968
45305: Would have worked the Liverpool-Manchester legs of 1T57 were it not for some last-minute problem and generally regarded as one of the best "Fives" of all. Worked at least one railtour in the last months of steam.
45407: another "good'un", and used on at least one railtour in the llast months of steam.

What of 44806, 44932 and 45231? Do any of these engines have any particular claim to fame?

The announcement of 45212 is on KWVR own website, so the Beano hasn't bxggxrxd this one. Or are you referring to something else?

I've looked through the last two "Beanos" & cannot find any reference to this.

THere's also 45428 (undergoing test running todayafter re-tyring). Admittedly it was withdrawn in 1967 but it could take part in a main line gathering if it was held between Whitby and Battersby!

44932 was overhauled and then stored, it did little work in 1968 but was in great condition.

44806 only survived as it had a better looking inner firebox than 73069, Ken Aldcroft reckoned that if he had known the state of 44806's outer firebox the descision would have gone the other way.

Really looking forward to seeing 5025 back funnily enough, I remember seeing it sat cooling outside Aviemore shed when I was about 8 or 10.

Mr R was quite clear in a post - since removed - about his feelings concerning unwanted headline seeking articles.

The last scheduled passenger duty was, beyond argument, the 21.25 Preston to Liverpool Exchange hauled by 45318, half an hour after the departure of 45212 for Blackpool. It was a difficult decision that night as one could not ride both trains - so the very last and final it had to be.

45212 did return to Preston but a station shunt of a sleeping car hardly counts as a "point to point" working and the subsequent identification of that station pilot duty extending into Sunday afternoon lend further detail, but not an extra departure to the narrative.

As explained, the following night 45156 was the last home, albeit off an excursion duty - I'm sure George Davies and Roger Nicholas would have been proud of that, and then after a steamless week the fifteen guinea special workings must stand outside normal reckoning.

What I would give to see 45025 standing at an albeit unrecognisable Manchester Victoria bound for Heysham one more time.

Thanks for the info, chaps - esp for confirming what I thought about 44932, i.e., that it had a fiarly quiet 1968. (it has become one of my favourite "fives" after a superb run from Swanage to London & back in Nov 2011). Shame 73069 didn't make it into preservation.

With 45428 either scheduled to be certified for Grosmont-Whitby (oir perhaps it already is??) once 45212 graces the main line, this will mean that 11 out of the 12preserved Black Fives that didn't end up in Barry Scrapyard will have run on the main line. That's pretty impressive and a tribute to what good engines they were. Any likelihood that any of the Barry "Fives" will go main line? 45491 would seem the most likely candidate , but this is pure speculation on my part.

45428 has been certified for Whitby - Grosmont - Battersby since shortly after its return to steam in 2010 - loaded test run to Battersby was 6th July 2010 (I was guard!)

"Eric" is on steam test today after retying and is scheduled to put in a few miles on the NYMR before returning to Network Rail. That probably means it will miss the last Battersby diner of the summer tomorrow nighht (likely to be 75029) but should soon be back in action on Grosmont to Whitby. Still quite a rare beast for the Battersby run, although I did one with the diner with 45428 last year.

Force of habit I'm afraid, my use of pre-nationalisation numbers reflects my principal area of railway interest rather than any restoration preference for 5212. I'm not sure either without checking its engine history card that it was in fact fitted with a domed boiler before 1967. The first 225 black 5s were fitted with a straight throatplate and shorter firebox than the rest, as well as being domeless. Of these, 57 boilers were fitted with domes and 24 element superheaters (as opposed to the original 14). Jenkinson & Essery's Illustrated History of LMS Locomotives gives the complete account. 5025 somehow managed to acquire a domeless boiler late enough to retain it into preservation, although it is pictured with a domed boiler in 1939 in Rowledge & Reed's Stanier 4-6-0s of the LMS; they were changed as part of regular maintenance. Many boiler repairs undertaken today would not have been economically justifiable when it was less expensive to build new ones.

As far as 5212s paint job goes, provided it's black, no worries. 4806 was green when I first saw it at Carnforth: maybe that's its claim to 1968 fame!

The other one was 4932, but I think that it was a lighter shade: Carnforth (and others) applied some strange liveries in the early days! When I saw 4806 at Haverthwaite, the tender was in grey primer and I was told that the green would be retained because they couldn't do the loco at the same time.
