Nice to see fellow NP members at Woodacre. We all entered the 'cloud cover' lottery and lost big time! She looked and sounded wonderful as she purred by in the gloom. I will catch her in sunshine one day...........please!??

It did come down rather heavy at one point didn't it !? Still, at least the sun running away got rid of that shadow that was annoying you ! Such is life!

Bit late getting around to this. :) By the time I knew it would be 46233 or 45305, there were only first class tickets left, so it was that or nowt so, with the £25 discount, it became do-able. The only draw back is that it meant being in the middle of the train all day and not near the noisy end at least once. :)

The first surprise on strolling up platform 9 at Lime Street was that coach D was in fact a Pullman, this was a first for me. I could also see it was not 45305 at the sharp end but 46233. (As was noted here in another thread, that I missed late on.) So, in great comfort, we set off a couple of mins down. We also had the the company of 120 tons of scrap iron at the rear all day making something like equivalent load 14, but the Duchess wasn't fazed by this and pulled steadily up to Edge Hill with only a slip or two on starting and on the crossovers. I was at a droplight in another coach - no droplights in a Pullman - and looked back to the duff and there was no pushing coming from that, she was doing it on her own.

What followed was a steady day, no fireworks, no over-speeding, just a competent performance form the old girl. We were never more than a couple of minutes out anywhere all day, the crew were content to let the loco reach her own speed. This was most noticable when leaving Carlisle and on up to Shap, just steady acceleration, considering the load and the timetable didn't require anything more anyway. All in all, a most comfortable day out for the passengers, crews and the loco. The tea/coffee, pastries and sandwhiches in first were also very good, not usually used to such luxuries on a tour and well worth it at the discounted price but maybe a tad too quiet for an enthusiast. :)

Some phots on my D1015 flickr site give a flavour of the day.

And some video of the day.

Any idea why a diesel was on the back. This is a train one can usually rely on not to have a diesel on the back.

Probably because it was out of Liverpool so the diesel hauled stock and 46233 there from Crewe and would be required to take it back afterwards.

You would think so, but the last time we had (4)6233 out of Liverpool was 2010 and the 47 was duly left behind. Although in 2010 that was useful as Edge Hill SB sent us the wrong way, onto the Crewe/London line when we should have been on the Wigan/Manchester line! :-0 The duff was called to drag us back to EH for another attempt at going in the right direction!

On this occasion I've no idea why it was there all day.

In the past the diesel has been left at Edge Hill. Strange one! Hope this is not going to be a regular occurence.
