Not an expert but I could probably lend a hand rubbing down and filling etc...would make a change from getting hot and bothered in 1668 or 1973!

Actually the Bulleid set would be better in green IMHO. Regarding the gala, any ideas on which way the visitors will be facing? 825 will be facing London I understand, but not heard anything on Sir Lamiel

I'm not a painter...I am guided by those that are, and by what we know from experience works.

If Duty Druid wants a couple of paint brushes we can find him some I am sure.

I don't personally dislike blood and custard, I am just explaining why the railway doesn't have a set. It comes down to economics basically.

You may not be a painter 21B, but Duty Druid is and has and is using his paint brushes to good effect.

Other Railways cope well with Blood and Custard so why not the MHR? I am not saying that all of the coaches should be in this livery, just a rake of 3/4 coached to take away the blandness of all green to add some variety.

    Kind regards

Not sure about that one - I visited a well known railway in the Midlands the other week and they were running a full blood and custard set. It looked awful, really tatty, I would guess that whilst it might look good when freshly outshopped unless an inordinate amount of time and care is lavished on it, in others words care that is beyond most preserved railways, once it starts to deteriorate it does so quite quickly.

One of the reasons BR gave up on crimson & cream was that the cream kept on spalling ie it dropped off in patches. Having said that I'm surprised that modern 'two pack' paints don't do the business for the railways; they're fine in the motor industry, most of us have cars that are finished with these paints and they're great: why not in the heritage railway industry?

While crimson and cream can brighten up a rake of coaches, please don't forget the maroon that was an exact contemporary of the Southern green.

The problem with the crimson & cream livery is the fact that both colours fade very fast. Maroon can go very pinkish in colour as well.

One of the best blood and custard rakes I have seen is the based at the SVR, kept under cover, coaches get washed regularly. They look superb.

We had a blood and custard set years ago and it didn't weather well. It looks fantastic when straight out of the shop, but sooner than other colours looks poor. It is the same story with every coach in that livery I have ever seen, on every railway.

We don't have enough carriages to have a "spare" set, and no where to keep such a set under cover.

I would really not like to see the Bullieds in that livery. I think that Southern green would be better or BR SR green to match everything else.

If enough members and shareholders wanted it, I guess we could look at a blood and custard set when we have enough carriages to justify a spare set, but even then we would have to accept that the initial painting will be more expensive, and need re-doing earlier than a green equivalent.

Details of the photo shoot are now on the MHR website/ASG page. As I understand, it is £10 for a photographic permit which is available on the gate to the yard.

Interesting to see the 9F has returned facing out of Alton - I half suspected it would as its been facing out of Alresford for quite a while now!

Hopefully with the 9F out of Alton it will mean that 777 will face out of Alresford along with 825, 34007 & 31806 to give the gala some"balance" otherwise it'll be a bit lop sided in terms of the number of engines t/f out of Alresford.........................

Still we should see the timetable with allocations on it pretty soon.......................... then its time to start planning the weekend :D

Oh dear, when 31806 is turned after its visit to the SVR, only 34007 will be facing out of Alresford. That will severely limit photographic opportunities!

    Indeed it will..............................................................

But don't forget that the 9F is going back to the Bluebell after the gala, so one less to worry about........................... depending when she comes back next year and depending if any of the home fleet go on holiday somewhere ( thinking 850 & 925) and which way round they return................. ( I can see the railway wanting to double head 850 & 925 as often as possible................... but it would be nice to see the pair s/b out of Alresford at some point)................... And if memory serves, I believe that 45379 will come back from her jollies to the NNR & SVR to face out of Alresford ( now won't that be nice :D) to "balance" things up a bit, even though things still favour the "Alton Engines"!

Looks like the sheep field near Alton will be getting a visit by the photographers over the next few weeks then?

Reading the latest issue of Steam Railway. Next years spring gala is shaping up very nicely. With the prospect of having T9 30120 and 3717 City of Truro.

Ah, I wasn't sure if 4379 was going to be returned t'other way rond, makes sense of course. The loaders that dropped the 9f off had fun and games getting out of Station Road on Tuesday as there were some roadworks outside the Bell Inn, and of course several people in big 4x4's decided to ignore the abnormal load support vehicle attempting to stop traffic turning into Station Road!
So just 825 and 777 to come, both to face London I hope....??

I did manage to get some shots of 850 working down hill the other week!

Will it be 777 or will it be 30777? The article in Steam Railway suggests that the re-paint may be shelved or put back to early next year due to mechanical work at Tyseley taking longer than anticipated.

Well i would hope not as i was told the wheels had already been painted.... so unless they re-paint them to black it would look quite odd if the locomotive was still in brunswick!
