Worth pointing out that this will be the Coal tank's first, and i believe only (away from the KWVR at least), gala in LMS livery. LMS coal tank on a set of Staniers? Worth turning up for I'd say!

    Hi all,
I'm just looking for a bit of advice.
Me and My mate are coming from Stockport on the Saturday to the event and I'm trying to work out what the best ticket would be to buy? Would it be the 1 day rover? Dont want to be forking out £40 to find I've bought the wrong ticket! :mad2:
    Thanks in Advance!
    Matt

    Hi Matt.

Yep, your best bet, if you're planning to be around for just the one day, is the 1 day rover. Gives you unlimited travel throughout the day (stuff like the cream tea/bacon sarnie obs saloon and the walk on breakfast service are extras payable on the day). There's an evening ticket if you're only going to be riding after 6pm, but as you're coming all the way from Stockport I'd imagine you'll be around for longer than that!

    Hope that's of some help.

    Hi Andy
cheers for that! Will buy the ticket advanced then now with that info.
We'll be heading from Stockport about 7 in the morning and coming back between 5 or 6ish in the evening giving a good 9 - 10 hours on the line :)
    Thanks again!
    Matt

Just to be clear, at galas, only rover tickets are sold (the odd exception for genuine walkers). People with through mainline tickets can upgrade to day rovers on the day.
If people wish, I'll post the exact validity times of the different tickets when the staff information comes out, saves you finding out on the day.

Never been to the Valley before (except to fly over its full length when training as a helicopter observer!) but will be there for the Saturday. Although I will be travelling during the event, I'd love to get some shots away from the stations. Can anyone suggest locations that someone who's never been there before can recommend?

Looks like it's gonna be a good September! A Maunsell fest followed by the SVR gala. Can it really get much better?

I'm pleased the SVR can be clear [and flexible] about that, unlike some other railways. A few years ago my wife and I planned a day out walking from Glyndyfrdwy to Carrog via Moel Ferna and the route of the old ng tramway to the slate quarries. we planned to take the Llangollen Railway back from Carrog to our starting point. I did not realise it was a gala day. On presenting ourselves at the ticket window at Carrog we were told, quite brusquely, by the guy on duty that we could only purchase Rover tickets at, I think, about £18 each. I pointed out that it was 3-30 in the afternoon and we would hardly get our moneys worth in the remainder of the day and that £36 was a bit steep for a 3 mile journey. The trains did not seem to be full. He was unrelenting and I told him I thought his attitude was not good publicity for the railway and that ordinary familes were also unlikely to know it was a special weekend and would also be put off by the price if they only wanted a single trip. He was not going to budge and so we walked the 3 miles back to Glyndyfrdwy and the Llangollen Railway lost the revenue for two single tickets. I have to admit that I have never been inclined to buy a ticket for a Llangollen railway gala since. I do attend every SVR gala and always enjoy them.

If you're willing to walk a bit, there's a road parallel with the line from Bewdley to Northwood Halt with various footpaths and clearings giving some decent shots. If you don't know the area I'd probably suggest bailing at Northwood and walking towards Bewdley, from where the station's easy to find, rather than walking across town to find the lane. There's also the generic Hay Bridge shot if you're driving - from Bridgnorth head towards Eardington, past the station and stop in a layby just before the road curves sharply under the railway.

    So a line-up of:

    V: 30120 / 31806 / 34053 / 7999
    H: 1501 / 2857 / 4566 / 5164 / 7812 / 42968 / 43106

Will be there all 3 days again, trying once again for 500 miles of haulage. Hopefully the signalmen don't let us down again like last year! Looking forward to what looks like another quality event from you SVR boys.

Also on the other side of Eardington, after the road bridge over the line, is the classic sideways shot from the field as the train climbs the bank. Parking can be a bit of a problem though. Although near Highley station you can get front and sideways on shots from the Engine House balcony and have refreshments at the same time!

The locations recommended so far are all good. I'd also recommend walking down to the river from Arley. If you take the riverside path turning right you can do the classic low level shots of Victoria bridge. If you turn right instead, you will get views along the majority of the Arley-Highley section.

surely 34053 should be counted as a home engine now as it is on long term loan to the SVR??
Tis looking like a good lineup! I wanted to try and make it to the SVR before 42968's ticket is up.

You've got until the end of January for an additional visit then Matt! I don't really know what to count 34053 as if i'm honest. I suppose I consider it a long term visitor.

The policy is that really only gala tickets should be sold, but the country stations (and TTIs) are allowed to use their discretion for walkers/locals.
This reminds me that hopefully any passengers from
The Cathedrals Express on the saturday of the gala wishing to do the SVR part will have been a) told that there is a gala on and b) given tickets for use on the SVR.
As for photos, I would also add the national cycle route between country park and hampton loade as a good place especially as it's right next to the line and is easy going (no that muddy!).

I think if you go to the majority of railways during an event, then you will be told the same thing. For all events at Llangollen, only a 'event rover' ticket is offered. I have heard of some of the booking office volunteers being sympathetic to walkers and doing a special ticket, but maybe on the occasion you visited the volunteer doing tickets at carrog was sticking to the guide set by the board/office staff.
