Well I'm sorry if you read things in your own way but, if I'm willing to give £10 per month for say 15years that's £1800 I would be giving away never mind the membership fee. So I would want to know it was being given to people who are trying. And I do know from my experience with the patriot that to raise membership and money you have to put the effort in. I'm not being a no it all if that's what your getting at. The patriot project is by no means perfect as none of the other newbuild or restoration locomotive groups.

I'm afraid that I've got to side with Std Tank in my perceived impression. Your post appeared to come over as quite critical of the Hengist group, especially as the questions weren't seemingly aimed at your other possible contribution targets. . Anyhow, you've clarified things now so we can move on

As the new website administrator all I can say is keep a close eye on the website and our Twitter feed (72010hengist). My main task is to make sure that regular news is made available to members and public alike, a task which started this weekend. I am always open to ideas and suggestions on extra ways that we can engage people in the project such as a regular e-newsletter (such as that provided by the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway), an FAQ section on the website is also another idea as you'd be surprised how many people ask us on the sales stand 'where will the loco be based ?' (the answer is the GCR), any more ideas?

Just one question (just to clarify in my head) were the Clan boilers were specific to the class- nothing else carried them? How similar are they to other BR standard boilers?

    Thanks

    Hi Chris
The boilers are modified from the Standard Class 7 reduced to 225psi from 250psi. The closest extant boiler types are those fitted to Cromwell / Britannia and 9F's.
They also had slightly smaller cylinders (hence the Class 6 rating) and the weight was reduced. These two factors increased the route availability of the class 6.

The boiler that will be fitted to Hengist will be an all welded design in line with current legislation and certification.

We are also working to planned design changes made by BR for the second batch including cast combined stretchers which incorporate the spring hangar brackets. This design change was due to cracks being found in the frames of the first batch around the spring brackets. These are also fitted to Duke of Gloucester.

Hope this helps, keep the questions coming !

The Clans Boiler dimensions are, overall, unique.
The centre section is similar to that on the 9f (believe the tube plate maybe identical) but longer and tapers down to a narrower forward section. At the Cab end the dimensions differ from the 9f to give a firebox as deep as the BR1 (Brittania) but narrower with 36(from memory) sq feet of grate.

Clans dont ever seem to have been worked terribly hard in service, either because they didn't need to be or didn't respond well to it, and the boiler dimensions suggest an economical rather than spectacular steamraiser.

Its known that the draughting, even after modification, was unfinished business. I'd like to think that a correctly dimensioned single KylChap or something a little more exotic that Mr Porta's acolytes might come up with will get the most out of that (relatively) small grate without altering the appearance any.... then shell be a match for any other class 6 you can(though im not going to) mention

The actual cylinder castings for the Britannias and Clans are identical. The bores of the cast iron liners are different.
Cast, combined frame stretchers and spring brackets were also fitted to more than half the 9Fs. 92134, 92240 and 92245 being the survivors fitted with these castings.
The firebox tubeplate pressings for the 9F and Clan are identical, but the drilling is different. The throatplates for the Clan and 9F are different

A thousand Pardons oh wise and powerful STD Guru, got me tube and throatplates confused...

On the 9f hangers, the ones that we're nt combined with stretchers; we're they cast as 3x linear pairs plus the ends pairs as singles ? ?

That is one of the good things about this site Chris, sometimes you learn something which can be useful.
Incidentally, our cylinders will be SGI without liners.

Now that is interesting. Can you explain the thinking behind that please? Would lubrication/wear be a factor maybe?

Not aware of any problems that 71000 has had with its SGI cylinders ?, or for that matter whether they changed the lubrication arrangements in light of the change... they dont appear to be wearing out piston rings frequently either...
Anyone got any info on this ?
