It was a good day, 5305 did very well with 12 on. Start was a bit slow and the junction and climb from WCML to Blackburn line brought her down to practically walking speed, but once over that little obstacle speed soon picked up. Hellifield was reached only a couple of minutes down but the long drag took it's toll and Blea Moor was passed some 10 minutes down. However at Appleby the deficit was only a couple of minutes. We were informed there that a late runned freight was now behind us and following it the service train. Driver Chipperfield and crew set off and with some brisk running we arrived at Carlisle 10 minutes early!!!! Departure from Carlisle was on time and 5305 dug in with Albert Seymour now at the regulator, Penrith was passed in fine style and for most of the rest of the climb 5305 could plainly be heard from the back of the train. Arrival at Carnforth was a few minutes down because we had to wait for a late running northbound before we could cross into the loop. Just as we were about to leave, the unscheduled engineering train was put onto the southbound loop and we were the let out in front of it. More brisk running meant arriving in Preston fairly near time. Video of the noisy run from Settle Junction to Helwith being processed.

    Nice shots Stephen.
The first event of this run was when the driver realised, at the Acton Bridge distant, that we were signalled for straight on at Weaver Junction instead of for Liverpool. We came to a stand on Dutton arches for the driver to no doubt politely ask the signaller what the was going on.
The run from Preston was the usual brisk and noisy performance by 5305, arriving at Carlisle 15 early.
The delay departing south appeared to be a culmination of things, I believe that one of the roads to the west of the platforms was unavailable due to engineering work and the fact that Scots Guardsman was using the other. So after watering the kitchen and buffet, 5305 had to propell the stock into the neck on the Newcastle line before going for service. Although she got back onto the stock in reasonable time, there was then a delay before she was able to bring the stock back into platform 3 and then run round. Then a freight appeared from the S&C so further time was lost before we finally got the right away some 15 minutes down. South of Penrith we were looped to allow a pendo past and this restart meant that there was a struggle to get back to a decent speed for the rest of the way to the summit. Then looped again at Greyrigg summit for a service to pass. Loco change at Carnforth meant that we recovered a bit of time, more at recovered Preston, and during out stop at Balshaw Lane so Wigan was reached only 12 down. Final insult of the day came to a stop outside Crewe 5 early only to be held until we were 5 late into the station...

45305 was again on 'Mersey Moorlander' duty for Compass Tours on Monday 6th August. I joined the train at Preston when 45305 came on and what followed was a superb performance by the Black 5. I was in the last coach, 11 of 11, and I could hear the 5 loud and clear when she was working hard over the S&C; beautiful. :) The weather was typical of this summer, sunshine and heavy showers. Throughout this, 45305 was sure footed on the S&C (more later).

An early arrival in Carlisle ensued amid another tremendous downpour, we also arrived in time to see 46115 being recovered by WCRC, T&T'd by 47's.

The return journey was about 10 minutes late getting away due to 'operational reasons', not the fault of the loco or train ( as Ralph W has already mentioned) this was to have a big knock-on effect. Anyway, 45305 got going to some purpose and ripped into the climb to Shap. The noise from the front end was exhilarating to listen to, raising the hairs on the back of the neck! However, the late start was bringing with it pathing problems and we were soon forced to loop at Clifton just as 45305 was really producing some noise and power, doh!

On the re-start 45305 was put to it with vigour. Shortly after, when getting into the 'power band' again, we hit some flange greasers (I think?) and we had four wheel slips at speed in quick succession (7 mins into the vid) it took a while before the driver was confident enough to open up again. After that we were looped again at Grayrigg and we were falling behind time by quite a margin so that we arrived at Carnforth when we should have been in Preston. 45305 came off at Carnforth - cutting short the 'water stop' and we then had the T&T 47's for the journey home.

All in all, a superb performance by a class 5 again and by 45305 in particular. A quality machine. Pity about the right hand piston-rod gland blowing through, still, it wont take much to repair that. ;-)

Also Ralph W was steward in our coach and it was nice to put a face to the name and have a brief chat. :)

I have posted a rather long video of the day.

Thanks for that Alan, and yes good to meet you, a pity a few more members have not taken advantage of this trip, especially as joining at Preston for the steam section makes it a very reasonably short length day.

It's a great pity Ralph. It is a great day out, not over long and a quality performance guaranteed, especially with the 5! :) It sure is hard work for the 5 as witrnessed by the scorched smokebox door of 45305 on arrival at Carlisle. There couldn't have been any paint left on it by the time we got to Carnforth. :) Never seen many scorched doors back in the day. Still what else do you expect from a class 5, they thrive on hard work. Stanier's finest. ;-)

    Alan. :)
