Going off on a tangent, After the great dorset steam show does anyone know where 34051 is headed, ive heard that she is headed south rather than being returned to york as i understand it for some work to be carried out on her

On the MHR website it states she is off there for their gala. I would imagine some remedial work will be done while she is at Ropley.

Ah, right, that does tie in with what i was told today, except the person that told me thought she was going to ropley to be assessed for a possible return to steam, sounds like he was putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5 ,

As Winkworth states, Bulleid's original intention was to use gears and shaft drive for cam-operated poppet valve gear. It would probably have been similar to what was used on the later P2s, and you rightly mention that the war prevented this from happening. One wonders if Stanier was partly responsible for the emergence of Bulleid's locomotives as he was an Advisor to the Ministry of War Production, and would have had an influence when it came to releasing scarce materials for locomotive production.

Slight problem, only one P2 had poppet valves - 2001 as built - and that was converted to piston valves to match the rest of the class.

Ah, must've misread an article in the current edition of Heritage Railway in that I thought it was changed from Lentz to Caprotti, hence why I thought this was so. In fact, it was probably referring to the A1 chaps thinking of using British Caprotti instead of the prototype's Lentz gear in their new-build project. My bad; got me rotary cam poppets in a twist...

The Hunt class D49/2s had rotary driven Lentz poppet valves. LNER.info gives a description here:The Gresley D49 4-4-0 Hunt/Shire Class. In passing it also notes possibly why the 1st P2 had the gear removed.

OVSB would have known all about the D49/2s and /3s, probably being involved in the development. I guess he thought he could make poppet valves work better on the southern, though the fact that they were in use on the LNER form 1929 suggests the materials had been developed - maybe they were all being used for war equipment.

Reading SR mag today. 34051 Winston Churchill will be attending the MHR with his tender according to SR Mag. The tender will go directly to the MHR from York with the loco first going to Dorset steam fair. Also reading SR mag 34051 hasn't been given a return date to York. There will also be another opportunity to photograph 34051 along side 73096,31806,41312,34007,34016.

Anyone in the market for photographing three Bulleids together.

No return date? i can see why people start to put 2 and 2 together, at this rate the NRM will be sending all its southern engines to ropley, whats next, 33001 and 35029, mind you though 35029 might need a bit more work

What might be an idea is to display 73069 , 34016 and some of the other dead engines in dirtied down condition as if it was last days of 1967

    Martin,

I think that's the idea of having 34007/16/51 together and also including 31806,73096,41312. According to SR mag they are going to recreate Sailsbury shed photo opportunity.

Not really, as I believe 34058 is in bits in the Alresford headshunt.

A few shots and a short video of 35028 Clan Line at Cardiff Central early yesterday evening - Mick Rogers Photography | Main Line Steam 2012

A locomotive that I haven't seen for quite a while (and this is certainly the first time that I've seen her in Wales). A lovely sight!

Departure from Cardiff was around 15 minutes late. It seemed to take rather longer than scheduled to get the ECS out of the sidings at Canton.

    Cheers,
    Mick

I guess this is the right thread to ask, but at Ropley station, in the garden area, there's a Bulleid wheel painted on display, looks like it was there for years... Anyone know what it's off, I assume it's knackered and a replacement made ?

There is a plaque next to the wheel which describes it as having been dug out of the ground in the early 1960's at the former Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough and dates back to approximately the 1850 - 1870's. It probably started life at the Woolwich Arsenal and due to a slight imperfection may not have been used on a locomotive and was instead used horizontally on a gun carraige to allow the gun to be swivelled.

So on that basis, Bulleid wheels date back to the 1850-1870 period? Something 's wrong somewhere with this caption I think!

It only looks (slightly) like a Bulleid (Boxpok) wheel ... it isn't one.

I found just now these images of 35018 showing some of the modifications as mentioned above by Bulleid Pacific.

Personally I'd be happy to see her like that whenever she emerges from Carnforth though I suspect its unlikely.
