This news report was posted on the NRM's Facebook page a few hours ago. Unfortunately, the article has again been targeted by a Facebook "troll" demanding the permanent return of the loco to Britain.

    Eisenhower locomotive headed to England

Frankly, reading such stupid, jingoistic comments as those posted in response to the above article makes one ashamed to be a member the UK enthusiast community.

I agree - there's no excuse for it at all. The Terms & Conditions of the LOAN are quite clear, and, more importantly, accepted & agreed by all parties concerned.

The guy just doesn't get it does he?.................................... certainly doesn't want to hear the truth........ and your right prats like him give the rest of us a bad name ................... maybe the mods on the NRM FB page should do something about him!!!!!

What these people fail to understand is that we gave these locos. as a GIFT. Once you give someone something you cannot dictate what they do with it. It is their property. End of!

P.S. It is very kind of the Americans and Canadians to go to all this trouble to lend their property to us!

Yeah, "People" like Mr. Moyle (and i use Mr. loosely as he reads like a dumb child), must be making the people at the NRM Green Bay and Exporail wonder what they are getting into dealing with a loan of their locomotives which were donated to them almost 50 years ago for an event across the ocean.

I'm not even going to get into the factual errors of his post on the article linked about the quality of North American steam locomotives or the main line running issue (which is all to do with Railway management and insurance, clearly he doesn't know how to read about things like the outright ban aside from Scotsman you experienced after 1968 in Mainline steam).

Blargh, ignorant fools just make me angry. Personally, i am pleased Exporail has been able to loan our our A4 to the NRM, and that as part of that, it will get some much needed attention to refresh her condition and make her look the stunner that she is/should be (and i note that funds haven't been available for the A4 in the face of the expenses of the past decade in opening the new museum at Exporail and restoring parts of the Canadian collection for the new building).

Maybe if i'm lucky i'll be able to get to the UK next year to see the lineup of A4's, because frankly it will be an awesome lineup and everyone should be focused on what a great event that will be rather than this stupid pettiness about the A4's not belonging to Britain anymore....

Well said. It's not as if we don't already have three operational examples of the class plus a museum piece. That feels like quite enough to support. Spread the word about the greatness of British engineering, I say.

Sadly this and other transport related hobbies seem to attract more than their fair share of "people" like these. I'm involved in bus preservation, it's just the same. For some reason these trolls can't get a grip of the simple concept of "if it's not your property, it's "nothing at " all of your business".

I said to my brother when news of this move first came out that it would be a good monster moves episode, it fits in with their series perfectly.

I though Monster Moves was shown on Discovery and Channel 5? But still it should be a great episode. I loved the one with the 8F's moves from Turkey back to the UK. Might get another appearance from Mr Goodman.

I agree about the comments about that troll. It does gives us a bad name. When I saw the images of 60010 the other day she didn't look as bad as I previously thought plus she hasn't had cosmetic work done since the 60's whereas 60008 has had some work done in recent years. Plus there's not all that much point in keeping them both over here as it will cost an awful lot to restore them both and then where would they find work. There's 3 A4's in steam and all 3 are on the mainline (I think Steve Davies said this is one of the reasons why they haven't overhuled 4468 for Mallard 75) and there aren't too many lines that could give them a good run other than lines such as the NYMR, WSR, SVR etc.

It is a Channel5 / National Geographic series produced by http://www.windfallfilms.com/show/1046/Monster+Moves+.aspx
They've actually done 3 steam loco move episodes, but I too enjoyed the 8f episode - the only problem with the series is that singing to fill in the gaps; the last series was the worst of the series'.

Given that these 2 wonderful locomotives are expected in the UK on 5 September, I'm getting that hat ready! What with this and the GWR 47xx project I am now of the opinion that what heritage railway enthusisats want then they seem to get! I think I shall be more positive about our hobby/calling/doctrine/religion or whatever in future!

Thats a large set of photos re the loading on Flickr. Makes you appreciate what a major task it is to move Dwight. Interesting that the museum that it moved from didn't have a loading ramp so they built one from scratch.

North American museums have no use for loading ramps. Most of our moves can not be made by road, or if they are it's a huge operation to do so, so museums are either rail connected, or have very limited movements. Even to ship North American equipment from site to site by rail can involve lifting locomotives and cars off the trucks to get them to fit in the loading gauge.

For example, the Toronto Railway Museum were i volunteer is completely isolated. When the T3 and Coach came over last summer for The Railway Children, only their small size given the much smaller UK loading gauge allowed them to be moved a great distance by road. When we have moved North American equipment, the most important consideration is getting it as close to the site as possible, for example, moving the 350tons of CN Northern 6213 from where it was on display to the museum (1.6 miles/2.6km) took two nights with extensive road closures and moving streetcar overhead wires to move it by road on a custom built platform, not a cheap proposition.

How about a charity photo shoot with all the sceptics standing in front of the A4's eating their hats! Any money raised by this venture could be given towards the transport costs or the repainting of 60010.
