Yeah they were the first and currently only images I've seen of 35018 like that. I did a search on the net last night for 35018 and found those 2 images.

34051 was behind a Class 33 in Holgate Sidings, York this morning. Was being moved prior to loading and road movement south.

So presumably due for a few laps around the playpen (weather permitting!) before being unloaded.

What state is the field in? Everything very squishy here in the Midlands - lots of Bank Holiday event cancelled. Good luck!

Can't beat a bout of rumour mongering and paint frothing so here goes. Talk on a Southern forum is she'll emerge from her makeover as 21C151 with a high sided tender. That would be very nice if true.

I would of thought she would of been kept in the condition she hauled Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train (which I saw at the time) in.
Thought that was the reason she was preserved in the first place.

A good point but some time ago Anthony Coulls (I think) posted that current NRM policy is, over time, to have the locos in the collection display liveries from different periods in their history and said not to rule out, amongst other things, an LMS liveried "Hardwicke." If this is so then a malachite "Winston Churchill" would fit in with this policy. Now it may just be an idle rumour that's been posted elsewhere so we'll just have to wait and see what happens when the makeover is complete.

Personally with the 50th anniversary of W Churchills funeral traing approaching. I cant see her in Malachite until after that event.

Plenty of time for it to be turned out in malachite, just ideally not for the 50th anniversary.

Happens to be the 75th anniversary of the B of B the same year so arguably a good reason for malachite but time will tell and it's only gossip ay the moment and we know how reliable that can be sometimes.

I would like to see 34051 in Malachite so she's in original condition with the higher sided tender but as BP says ideally leave her in Brunswick Green for the Funeral Train anniversary.

Also if York has been slowly getting the money (just a guess on my part as I don't know if the target has been met yet) for the cosmetic work then where's the money going to come from for the new tender tank

Won't need a new tank, will just have to weld the raves on

It would probably be just as easy to tack-weld thin steel sheet to the outside. That way, you could even preserve the original BR paint job underneath. The tank top may need replacing anyway, as there's no telling what the paint is hiding.

Don't think it's the original BR paint job as I'm sure she's had a repaint since arriving at the NRM. During her stay at Didcot the paint was faded and peeling, unlike the somewhat better condition she has been in of late.

Parts of the paintwork was certainly peeling off two years ago.

Why talk about a new Tender top, she is just getting a cosmetic make over, not being restored to steam, unless of course the casing and tender body are so beaten up and thin that it need a new casing, I bet though that there will be a few at Ropley that will be saying whilst shes here, cant we do a full restoration ? has she ever been assessed , just in case one day York might change its mind not this time, but in the future?

34051 was repainted at Derby - can't remember if it was Loco or C&W. remember taking rods off so that loco could be hauled to Derby.
