Anyone remember the 'N' in black with SOUTHERN 1874 on the tender when they filmed the Ovaltine advert at Ropley?

Sounds like the problem with the front end of the frames of 506 are similar to what problems 60019 Bittern had, obviously until the cylinders are removed it will be difficult to know the extent of repairs needed.

I take it that in light of the discovery of further problems with 506`s frames, 499 will also need to undergo similar inspection.

Bittern had a frame crack. 506 has frame distortion which is the main source of concern. 499's frames are different again.

Re: locos in unlined black with "sunshine" Southern lettering - S15 506 ran like that for a while, and I think Q1 C1 and M7 56 have done, too.

    Think you mean 53!

S15 No. 841 also carried it as has Q No. 541, a couple of the terriers including Newport aswell as a couple of the USA tanks and of course Normandy though her version had her name in sunshine. The Q1 currently carries it.

I also believe the P at KESR has carried a southern black livery aswell?

Q class No 541 carried Maunsell unlined black livery, with plain Southern 541 on the tender, rather than the sunshine lettering carried by the other examples mentioned. A nice variant on plain black. Plain black with sunshine lettering looks really good when the engine is freshly painted, C1 looked great when it entered service in 1992/3. As with any unlined black livery, once the gloss goes off the black, it starts to look a bit drab, as C1 looks now in the NRM. Hopefully one day she can return to the Bluebell for another term of service and a freshen up.

    :attention:EVERYBODY :attention:

    Right time for a

    SHAMELESS PLUG

on behalf of the Wagon Group at Medstead.

Its pretty clear on here that EVERYBODY likes the freight trains that run, during the gala's and at certain weekends, judging by the amount of comments regarding the motive power you would like to see up front!

Well to keep the wagons etc in good nick AND continue restorations we need your MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have just commenced the restoration of BY Van No.653 which was acquired from the Bluebell it is a wreck, this is what it currently looks like...........

Den Anhang 5422 ansehen Den Anhang 5423 ansehen Den Anhang 5424 ansehen

This is what it was used for

    4 Wheel Passenger Brake Vehicles

Its going to take a LOT of MONEY to get this one running, to help us achieve that goal (if you'd like to see it running sometime in the next two years) GET OFF THE TRAIN AT MEDSTEAD and come and say hello ( we don't bite AND we won't scare your kids!), we will have a fund raising stand on the platform packed with goodies including railwayana, NEW LIMITED EDTION Colliery wagon in weathered or unweathered condition, we shall also be taking orders for photographic prints - so something for everyone!!!!!!!!!!

In addition we will also be giving FREE guided tours at 12:30 & 2:30 pm lasting approx 30 minutes ( so you won't miss any of the action) where you will be able to see for yourselves what we get up to including wagons at different stages of restoration, especially the BY

Just a correction here Dave if I may be so bold?

In all sincerity this has been a team effort from both the Medstead and Alton wagon gangs, for everyone has made a contribution to the success that we are having now.

Without the contributions of second hand books and Railway items that we have received we would not be the success that we are today.

    Long live teamwork:)

Please can someone confirm (or otherwise) - I think I read on the MHR website that 92212 was suffering a couple of minor problems (Broken springs??) after the gala. Have these now been fixed? I see that it is rostered for this weekend's services, according to the most recent MHR loco roster, which was only updated a day or so ago. I had a great footplate ride on this engine a couple of years back, and as I'm planning to be in Hampshire this Saturday, would consider making a detour to renew my acquaintance with this fine machine - if it is going to be used as advertised - before it goes off on further travels.

    Thanks

It did suffer some broken springs - two replaced in August and one in the week after the gala. A good possibility that they were broken during loading/unloading.

Hampshire Unit, I'm mightily impressed so a big :thumb: from me! (and yes I have looked through the gallery :D)

But, I'm also intrigued as to the settings you used, I assume that the ISO setting was somewhere near "crazy" just to get a good enough shutter speed?
