Did either of the preserved Lizzies carry BR Express Blue. I've seen Hornby models of some in this liviery. I'd love to see a Blue Merchant again.

I can't remember where I've heard this, but there was talk that one re-built MN will be repainted in blue (I thought it was 35009?)... I can just remember seeing 35005 for the first time, sadly it was her first tour in green after her stint in blue :/ I agree with Dan and would like see a Merchant in blue :)

I wonder how long 60163 will remain in blue for. 12-18 months would be my guess. I suppose I would be asking too much to ask for the chime whistle to be fitted to the top of the smoke deflector as well... I just loved seeing 60163 storming through a station with the chime whistle 'screaming' and the steam forming that wonderful curve along the deflector. :) Is it just me that wouldn't mind seeing the whistle re-located?!

It has been said that her "brand" colour is the Apple Green with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender, so we shall see!

Hopefully a well known engineer based in the Bury area will buckle to light pressure and paint his one into Blue when it's finally overhauled ;)

It was Steam Railway last year. They reported that Ian Riley was to buy 35018 and paint her BR Lined Black and 35009 in BR Express Blue but it seems that 35018 has been sold to WCRC and IR has decided to take on work on 45212 which may delay a return for 35009. Sadly I think I missed seeing 35005 in Blue but do still have the Hornby model of her.

I hope she's in Blue for a similar amount of time to Brunswick Green so its a bit more fair in how long she spends in livieries.

Wasn't 60163 supposed to attend Autumn WSR gala and then Autumn ELR gala and doesn't now appear at either?

Definitely not doing the ELR gala anymore, never knew about the the WSR gala and wouldn't see why they would need an A1 if it's an S&D gala.

It is this absence of firm gala commitments this autumn which has created the slot to begin the annual overhaul and carry out the repaint into blue

A1ST still list this tour as one that 60163 will be hauling. Does anyone know where the annual maintenance take place this time? One would presume it would be somewhere like Ropley or Wansford, where there are painting facilities...

I'd say it would be somewhere down south. Tornado starts from Taunton on the Shakepeare Limited but Minehead is more of a test bed for locos going on the mainline rather than a maintainence facility, Southall seeing as that's where Tornado is based for her trips in the South, Ropley as thats where the last maintainence was carried out and also gives the MHR a chance to run her out again like they did earlier in the year. The least likely is York as she's in the South for her last tour before maintainence and also her first run afterwards.

Remember she ran back to York last time for a repaint, and boiler work, to use the NRM paint facility.

I would expect another unveil at the NRM would bring another chunk of welcome publicity for all concerned, you never know 4472 may be finished for the same time.....

    A little optimistic, aren't we! :D

You are quite right, from Eastleigh to York on the 14th Dec 2010. I reckon though that the NRM was 'home' to Tornado because of the problems that she encountered earlier in the year. Where 60163 has had few problems thus far (touch wood it stays that way!), I would imagine she will be staying in the south...

I was sorting through some still images and video last night and came across something I'd prepared for YouTube in Feb 2010, but not uploaded, for some reason. So, here are a couple of clips from Tornado's first year on the mainline: 60163 Tornado, Mainline 2009 on YouTube.

The locations are Woodwalton, near Huntingdon (in the snow), and Dawlish, in summer sunshine.

By the way, I'm rebuilding my web-site. The new one is at www.SteamAge.co.uk/wp1/. Please have a look and let me know if you spot any mistakes or omissions. So far I've transfered all the music stuff, and about two thirds of the railway video pages. The old one is still in the same place, but direct links to individual pages all take you to the home page, to start with.

Think you'll find that A1's were quite common around Darlington, part of the famous Stockton and Darlington Railway. Its these 7Fs trying to be an S&D machine... why need them when you can have a Q6....
