Quite right, the good stuff came from Brighton - Light Pacifics included.

A shed master on a certain preserved railway in the south of England refers to the Jarvis rebuilds as "wrecked." :)

Returning to topic, could you be more specific please? Surely all GW thing are ugly.

Compared to anything built by the GWR even the Jarvis rebuilds are much better locos.
As for the new build County, how about sacrificing 3440? They look much the same so just swap the names and numbers around and nobody need be the wiser.

Ah, I know the very man :)

Being specific - well, even the most died in the wool Swindonian must admit that that County Tank is a bit, well, fugly... And as for his tender engines, Churchward may have had modern ideas about front ends and boilers, but he was firmly in the 1860s when it comes to crew comfort!

As for other GW engines - well, to take the 4300 class (as this thread is about). Nothing wrong with that that some nicely accessible outside Walschaerts gear, a helter-skelter lighthouse, a proper cab, an extra guage glass, and a decent tender wouldn't fix. If you did all of those, you'd have a proper engine, something like this: Bluebell Railway Locomotives - U 1638. What's not to like?

The odd thing is that Churchward did build an experimental locomotive with an enclosed two side window cab etc, and apparently the crews hated it so much it was taken off again.

But boys aren't we rather trolling a bit excessively here?

I think the 4-4-2T looks quite nice. You can see the parentage in the 2-6-2Ts.

Wasn't the GWS originally calling it the "Three Counties Project" ie.10xx,4-4-0 & 4-4-2T? The 4-4-0 was to use the No4 boiler from 5227, the tank was to use the one from 4115 and both sets of new wheels from the Saint pattern. I could be mistaken but I seem to remember something about using the 43xx cylinder block pattern when it is needed for 5322's retro-fit (it only received its outside steam pipe block under B.R.) You see old CJ's standardisation policy did work! Ray.

I guess, I just consider it (and hope everyone else does) as a bit of harmless fun.

That's something I've been meaning to ask about. I remember reading in an old issue of Railway World that the retro-fit had originally been planned to take place during the last overhaul, but she is still running with outside steam pipes. Why did the plan change? Is the retro-fit still planned to take place in future?
