From an enthusiast's point of view, a good thing too. Much rather hear it tackle the moors once it's bedded in, rather than a newly restored loco which'll no doubt be highly susceptible to hot boxes, heavy priming, and all manner of other issues!

Heavy priming? You will have to explain that theory!

6046 made its first visit to Cauldon Lowe last night. The air pump is now fitted and just requires the final piece of pipework for the steam supply to be fitted.

New boilers and those that have had a lot of work done on them almost always end up with some oil inside from such processes as stay tapping. This often leads to priming on the first steamings. I've certainly experienced it.

Just got photos through of 6046 on a loaded test run to Cauldon Lowe.

Looks like things are going well with her running in.

This is something that we have not experienced with 6046 as there are very few “tapings” on this type of boiler. The firebox is all steel and therefore the stays are all welded in.

Careful boiler management reduces the potential for oil content in the boiler with washouts after the static steam tests before running in started.

All welded boiler are common in large modeltraction engines but are still notorious for priming - the weld flux is another culprit I believe and it can take several steamings with washouts and water changes between before problems are tamed. It was certainly the case with my 4" Fowler boiler and I know several others who have had similar problems.

I have a 4" scale Burrell with a steel boiler(not new) and I find that despite having an anti-foaming agent in it the boiler water treatment causes priming if used at the recommended concentrations. If I reduce the dose by 30% the priming stops. Is 6046 on treatment? Just a thought.Ray.

Every newly-outshopped engine I've worked on has become "soupy" well before the normal washout date. Of course, the difference that makes to performance depends on how prone the class is to priming in the first place. With smaller, older, round-topped firebox engines it can effectively render them useless. With something like a BR Standard it shouldn't make much difference if they're blown down properly and not mistreated. I'd expect the S160 to fall into the latter category TBH, but it's still worth keeping an eye on it. As others have said boiler treatment doesn't help and it might be worth reducing the dose until the loco has settled down.

To date we have not seen any priming issues on either LE runs or loaded test runs to Cauldon Lowe. As mentioned before carefully managed water changes during testing has flushed the boiler through to remove any oil contamination.

    Regards

Only just checked the thread after a few days. As others have said, was only assuming it would likely prime quite heavily if worked to Moors levels so soon after the amount of work it's had done!

All being well, i should be visiting the CVR this weekend, so 2 questions, if someone in the know could tell me, as its not an easy trip...

    1) is 6046 rostered? (excluding the usual terms as per newly overhauled locos)
    2) Is it just the Cauldon Lowe service, or does the green CVR service run also, and if so which will 6046 be on? (i ask because the previous Cauldon Lowe weekend had green CVR service advertised on the callender as well; the callender only mentions Cauldon for this weekend but the timetable shows both, if you get what i'm saying)

    Cheers

69621 will be running on Sunday, 6046 has a few teething issues that need sorting along with the back head cladding that is being fitted.

So has the DBT been dispensed with, now?
