Yes it was in the new steam magazine, it has been invited and maybe there for a month or 6 weeks with some mainline tours!

According to Steam Railway they have received an invite from Meiningen works and it states " if it happens, the trip is expected to coincide with Meiningens centenary in summer 2014".

I think its been an aim for the A1 Trust for a while as they wanted to take the loco to Meiningen as a thank you for the building of the boiler. On their Facebook Group someone from the Czech Republic has also sent an invitation for Tornado to visit them with the chance to run her at 100mph.

Not sure how I'll get a link to work but it was posted on October 10th by someone called Sudař Radek Pančo who said.

''I would like to ask you whether it is likely that you will accept our invitation to visit the Czech Railways of your steam locomotive Tornado in the Czech Republic in 2014??

Czech Railways love you for it to mediate its test circuit Velim test drive constriction maximal speed steam locomotive Tornado cca 160 km / h

    Radek P''.

Graham Langer did post a reply underneath saying ''That's one for the Board! 160kph = 100mph! Mmmmmm......''.

From the sounds of it something will need to be fitted to Tornado in Germany thats their version of TPWS. Perhaps something similar would be needed in the Czech Republic.

Thanks Dan, found it now - buried below much recent traffic.

Not certain about the Czech Republic but if DB AG allows Tornado to run up to say 150 KPH, then that might become extra leverage on NR for a similar uplift for the engine back in the UK on designated routes such as the ECML.

The invitation to the Czech Republic is an interesting one... Velim is a complete test circuit which is self-contained and would be a fun place to put any loco through its paces.

Quite a few a people on this forum have been asking "What next for Tornado?", this is a tour that would certainly keep her in the headlines. However, it is clear (from their FB page and other sources) that a significant amount of sponsorship would have to be forthcoming to fund the jaunt - any offers?

It doesn't have to go to Czech republic to go at 160kph, the loco in my avatar has several times run around Germany at 160kph, last year being the most recent. It too is a meiningen product.
DB steam often works in to Czech, Poland, Austria and Hungary, many times a year, so DB mainline certification shouldn't see too many issues in 60163 heading east, indeed it would be a missed oppourtunity if they didnot.

I heard from a friend of a friend (who pretends to know things) that the A1 might be having boiler issues again. Has anyone heard anything similar?

Just checked the A1 website and a new update is available. Just about to read it.

No issues reported, with the blue being applied.

....ah well! That's the joy of gossip! :gossip: Never believe it unless you get it first hand..... I see the Trust have replaced some (all?) superheater elements but that was planned, they don't last forever and have to work in a pretty hostile environment, I guess you could consider them "consumables". Maybe your friend of a friend thinks this work is a symptom of "boiler issues". At the end of the day all boilers need routine work between overhauls, be it changing the odd stay (ask Peter Townend about that!) to caulking stays and tube ends. They sure as hell wouldn't be painting it if there was a major problem!

Funny that was my first take, I had a brief (very brief) thought that FS had suddenly come along in leaps and bounds! But if you put a pair of 'German' blinkers on it with FS's name plate and number, I bet quite a few enthusiasts wouldn't be able to tell, especially on the lineside at 75mph. Just a thought for the NMR.
