Isn't St. Blazey a DBS depot? If so it's quite possible that the on going problems with DBS would have impacted upon the move anyway if they'd been given the job.

In the bad old days the Railmotor would have never got on the mainline.

From what I've been reading on the gen sites, it is actually a 47 that has been heading south west, not 37516 as we first thought. **EDIT: Was 47245**

Reported FAILED at Heywood Jc (ta Driff on SW gen) and apparently a 33 is being prepped for the trip west. One of the chaps on SW gen asked 'how far the 33 will get... Place your bets!'

Thanks for the link, I wonder how they are going to let people know at this late stage?. It would have been a very long journey from East Anglia for me, quite apart from my associated travel and hotel expenses.

It beggars belief that with over 24 hours still to go before the first run that another loco cannot be found to move no.93 to Liskeard. I know of people who are making a weekend of it and have train tickets and hotels booked.

I'll keep an eye on the rail websites to see if there are any updates. It doesn't look good at the moment. <BJ>

You have my sympathy. Three of us are booked but were driving there and back on Sunday so at least we're not out of pocket on the travel front.

    I think that's a real shame.
It would have been bad enough if the railmotor itself had failed,
but to think it's sat there only about 10 miles from Liskeard,
ready to go but can't get there because there's nothing to tow it those 10 miles
must be so frustrating for everyone involved.

I'm booked on the following Sunday and live locally (Plymouth),
but I feel really sorry for those who have made arrangements
to travel long distances to get to Liskeard this weekend,
and of course for those involved in the organistaion,
who apart from anything else, could stand to lose quite a lot financially

What i'm struggling to understand is what happened to that report of the 33 being dispatched from Southall after the 47 failed ?, I can only assume drivers hours must of come into play as this would of been a bit more of a priority than rescuing a knackered Duff.

Pity really someone coulden't pull a few string and let the Railmotor steam to Liskeard under it's own power in the small hours, I honestly can't think of a train running in Cornwall between 1 and 3am, the up and down Night Riveira's both being East of the Tamar at this time.

Another point im not sure on, why did it have to be cancelled because it wasn't moved today ?, why coulden't an VSTP move be arranged for Saturday ?, it would of needed an FTR to leave BWR metals anyway and a smallish vertical boiler could be fired up quicker than an 8P Pacific, is there an operational issue there I've overlooked ?.

If I may correct you slightly David - the report (this was off the gen, I would like to add, from one of my own sources - this was also stated on SW gen, so I wonder whether my source was in touch with the chap who posted it?) stated that the 33 was being prepared, but had not actually been dispatched at the time of writing. I do not know what happened after I posted the last message. Reports, both on the gen and off, have run dry on the whereabouts of the 47. My source did not state that whether the 33 was coming from Southall or not - I wonder if there were any 33s available at Southall, or whether they were up in Carnforth?

My source wishes to remain anonymous at the time, but is generally accurate. If this changes, I will edit the post accordingly.

This is all very regretable. I think the Railmotor/Didcot people have done the sensible thing in the circumstances, and I hope they succeed in getting in touch with all the ticket-holders in time. Those who have booked accommodation will probably find that they can transfer their bookings to another date, this being a fairly quiet time of year. (Thumbs up for Great Trethew Manor, near Menheniot. They've transfered my party's booking to next Sunday with no quibble.)

I know that "these things happen" and the most important thing is how efficiently communications, rearrangements and refunds are handled. However, I have to say that WCRC are suffering a bad patch at the moment, what with their failure to provide a loco for Railtourer's Welsh Boarders Steam Special, the failure of their diesel on the Wensleydale tour, and the failure of the water carrier 48 hours before The Marylebone Flyer. I hope these are unrelated incidents and that they can get a grip on the necessary fixes. Passengers, tour companies and their various sub-contractors do rather depend on West Coast to get it right, week-in, week-out.

(With tounge firmly in cheek...) Maybe work on finishing off Galatea should be put on hold just at the moment, while the diesel fleet is given a good going over. ;-) Now, that's something that, as a mainline steam enthusiast, I never thought I have cause to write!!

No worries James, sounds like crossed wires, never any intention to shoot the messenger.

There's been a West Coast 33 out the back at Southall most of this week.

As said by others, I can't understand why another DL can't be sent to Bodmin by tomorrow evening, or the Railmotor allowed to move itself.
On another point, what a rip-off being charged £6.85 booking fee by Ticketweb, I'm sure the website only mentioned £1.85until I reached the bottom line when suddenly another £5 was added!
