Hi Kestreleyes, here is a link showing Peak Cycle Links' design for yr railway extension to Rowsley Village. They show sections, layout, embankment enhancement and much detail. You should consider employing them for the further extension to Buxton... LOL

Very impressive and good to see an apparent intention of cooperation. (I notice that they can't spell Okehampton either!)

Is the dog leg proposed for Peak Rail around Rowsley sidings supported by it?

now that depends, the cycleway also wanted a crossing of the track under warney lane bridge till they were told it was not realistically safe to do so ,they then readdressed the issue and came back with a more sensible proposal, it all depends on things like land issues, rights of way, what they believe they can do without to much interference from other land users, leases of land etc, as with it all, until its in and done its nothing more than proposals, though as you say they do a nice plan indeed, as with the line north that has already been marked out and runs alongside the river somewhat,so their cycleway depends on discussions with other parties around that i would imagine.

    thanks for the links too

Elsewhere Robs been busy building the bobbies walkway at Riverside and other track work. And proposals for reuse of the old
South yard are underway with plans for a Deisel restoration shed in progress

With reference to Peak Cycle Links drawing for the Peak Village extension, has PR considered, when the temporary run-round loop becomes redundant (after the extension to Bakewell), setting up 'camping coaches' on it for cyclists doing the 'Grand Tour"? This could give PR and the cyclists a long-term association and foster good relations between both parties, not only on the Buxton/Matlock route but throughout the country..

It is also worthy of note that their drawing shows the railway proceeding into the Haddon Estate enroute to Bakewell and beyond (possibly, LOL)

Furthermore, they say on their website they have withdrawn their Planapp. for the Haddon Estate/Bakewell section at the behest of Derbyshire County Council who are planning a grand scheme for the Buxton/Matlock Monsal Trail corridor.. Surely this 'Grand Project' includes a railway..

The subject of camping coaches has crossed many of the volunteers minds in the past more than once, especially as being within a tourist honeypot an originally having some in the area originally in BR days , whilst I'm not aware o any plans to site any in a redundant loop ( may not be redundant?) depends on future plans and all ! I know it's not a cheap thing to make camping coaches that fit modern regulations and all as one of my colleagues pointed out not long back. But would be a nice idea I agree, who knows :)

Whilst not down this weekend thanks to work I dd attend the volunteers dinner last night at Willersley Castle hotel in Cromford where quite a few people received awards for their hard work over the year including mr and mrs Latham who have been looking after Darley Dale station throughout the year even entering it for a Darley in Bloom contest, well done all

I also noted several people braving the rain and wind last night at Rowsley working on the NRM coaches other side in the LMSCA shed and also on the class 50s. Keep up the good work all

Lastly the coming year will be an eventful one as there's incoming charters in springtime and a steam gala planned in the new timetable for 2013, await this space!

Off topic a little , the midland footbridge at Hope is being refurbished, the two bottom pieces seem to being sandblasted at present with the top half off site and a temporary footbridge in place for now

I note your rhetorical question. Can anyone from the Peak Rail committee asssure that they have close working contact with DCC on this? Is it not the crossing of the A6 at Rowsley that is the issue rather than the river Derwent?

as far as i have seen the council and PR do indeed converse regularly, as do many local authorities with us, it has taken many years to get the council more on our side but they do keep us in the loop on local happenings, ive seen that myself and its a good rappor :)

any crossing of anything these days becomes an issue, notable rights of way, roads, bridges,SSSI and watercourses all thrown in the pot :(

Indeed - see the latest Moorlands and City issue, hopefully resolved satisfactorily, which is why I asked. Thanks for replying and good to hear that all is not lost yet. One heard so much discomfiting news about this over the years, especially about cycling but I gather that there is good rapport with them too.

indeed its a struggle for most railways to keep themselves at the forefront of information as regards things like, interoperability, legal frameworks, access issues, others who want to use the available unused trackbed,etc--even standards all change from one to another, thats primarily the best reason for organisations like the HRA to be at the forefront of talks and indeed to keep on a par with all the local organisations so your all on the same level, one of the latest examples being the changes in level crossing laws and responsibilities that many railways were consulted upon for their thoughts etc.

its not to say that in this legally suited world spanners wont appear in any railways works, but that as a whole organisation we must try to mitigate the times they can occur through close communication with outside parties.

    "wow that was technical ey!"

a good example of this was at a recent IRSE minor railways seminar at Kidderminster, I presented PRs project for operating into Matlock and another gentleman from the Spa Valley presented theirs for their connection into Eridge,a similar operation in many respects, both using an adjacent free part of the Network, both top and tailing to start with,as well as some other similarities, the differences between what they can and what we can do were vast even on some minor issues,a comment from one inspector present suggesting that some re-communication with the southern TOC on their link may be worth pursuing as their project had issues which we had resolved with our partners over the fence and thus could have helped their case for doing something different to the same end rather than one particular way, as said all need to talk and a common framework for railways starting up on a project could be employed using those who have gone before-why reinvent the wheel!

    BOOK NEWS

"The Matlock Cable Tramway" by Glynn Waite

The idea of a cable tramway in Matlock goes back to the late 1860s when Job Smith is said to have seen some early lines in San Francisco and felt that such a system would be suited to Matlock. However, it was March 1893 before the tramway was opened over a route that at one time made it the steepest cable tramway in the world. It is doubtful if it would have been built without the finance of George Newnes of "Tit Bits" fame, who originated from the area.

The Council took over the undertaking with great enthusiasm, even examining possible schemes for extensions, but soon realised that while it attracted many tourists during the spring and summer, it rarely covered its direct operating costs in the autumn and winter months.
Nevertheless, until 1910 it made a profit in all but three of the years, but thereafter it started to make annual losses with the Council subsidising the undertaking from its general account. It continued operating throughout the year until September 1927.

Glynn Waite, who first took an interest in the concern when living at his birthplace of Cromford, has researched the tramway in considerable detail, in some cases dispelling information that has been repeated over the years. (For book signings on 8th December, see the "Events" section.)

I think 68013 had a steam brake problem, but the plan is to have two steamers on most of the Santas. Sapper is at PR for about 3 months.

    Cheers
