Superb snaps. The quality of my video is nowhere near this quality, but here it is as a taster from the same spot 60163 Tornado - The Cathedrals Express - Crofton 29/11/12 - YouTube

A couple of pages back, there was a brief discussion about Tornado not being quite noisy enough (which I tend to agree with) but today I did manage a couple of locations with her sounding like a real steam loco (and doing a wheelslip into the bargain!)

She can be pretty noisy when she wants to be!

    Example (Watch from 1:50):

Yes - she seems to purr like a sewing machine at speed or on the flat. Maybe she's been built and maintained too well?

But she certainly makes a racket starting a train on a gradient. Some friends were totally gob-smacked when they watched her take a railtour past the end of our garden in south London from a signal stop on the gradient.

Reminds me of one of the final Deltic railtours when we were brought almost to a stand in the dark for no apparent reason. As we restarted, a load of flashes went off from a crowd of photographers. Maybe one of them knew the local signalman?

EDIT: Looking at that Tornado video again, someone forgot to switch the maintenance lights off above the wheels. Or were they left on as a favour?

What's all this noise malarkey about? She's a thoroughbred built to the best (UK) standards of her day, and is generally on top of the job with power to spare.

If you want noise, then you need to be following lesser machinery - all that noise is the sound of a loco being strangled by its own antiquated exhaust system ;)

So you don't search Youtube for "Thrash!" videos then, like this one?

The thing that got me on The Elizabethan was the effortless way she gets up to 75mph, it is really impressive from on board.

And its not just the flat, 13 on, climb away from durham heading south, a notorious start, was dismissed with almost contempt.

The benefit of a new build with a sound maintenance structure behind her i would say, long may it continue.

Indeed she can! I was on that Railtour with my Father and she provided a superb soundtrack and performance all day. My Father is not really a fan of LNER loco's as he didn't see many of them when he was spotting as a kid but even he was impressed with 60163 on that run. We also did a CE to Exeter with 60163 and this was another impressive display from 60163 and her crews.
Here are a couple of videos to illustrate that storming run to Wales from 2010:

And here is the very vocal departure she made from Shalford in December last year working a CE to Ely:

The thing is Richard, I hate the term "thrash" when steam loco's are involved because there is a significant difference on thrashing an engine ie. knocking 9 barrells out of it and driving an engine hard but within it's limits.

If Tornado was driven to a level of thrashing then I'm sure the footplate rep on board would interveen but having experienced the loco, she has alot of power with more in reserve if needed. Here's a bit of evidence too that she can far from be quiet!

A couple of video snaps of Tornado near Wootton Bassett earlier this afternoon. The video itself should be up and ready by 16:00.

Thanks for the Vid. That's a different support coach she's running with from the one I've seen before. Anyone know any details?

I think 60163 is using 6024's support coach. 60163's is still under renovation although another may need to be found as supposedly 6024's support coach needs an overhaul. Not sure how long it'll be before 60163's own is ready.

What a piece of luck! I stop off back at Swindon to see 60163 pass, before catching the next HST to Didcot. It was quite fortunate then, that 60163 was almost 25 minutes late and 6201 was on time, and just after Lizzie rolled in, the centre road signal went to green, and 60163 raced through, whistling all the way to 6201.

    This was spectacular...

The link is here, and I will post the links to the other videos from the day as soon as I possibly can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weH1je6sDfk
