Makes less noise as well. While 34067 was waiting at Haywards Heath on Saturday the diesel was making a racket (although whether that was heating or not I'm not sure) but I only heard the generator coach today just as it was about to pass under the footbridge.

Have you not heard 6310 (the chocolate and cream generator van)? It's ridiculously loud - when it was in Paddington a couple of weeks ago it could be heard throughout the station.

Not sure if that was the one on todays but didn't seem to be making much noise.

Today's was incredibly quiet, especially in comparison to the one used on the 10/03 run to Plymouth (Not sure if that one was 6310?). You heard the generator coach long before you heard 60163...

Indeed it is cold tonight. Was at the Julians Road Industrial Estate doing sound. Just about froze to death waiting for it and it was hardly worth it as the acceleration was very gentle.

Looking at videos on YouTube, it was 35469 (the ex-RCS blood & custard BSK) today which is indeed very quiet, but 6310 was on the Plymouth trip in March.

I was at Sandy hoping it would be on the down fast, but it trundled through on the slow instead. In the 20 minutes I was at the station, the frost on the car that had previously melted had already frozen again!

Interesting that they seemed to turn the whole train at Eastleigh as the genny was on the back in both directions.

I had noticed that too. They must have used the through road through the works.

Thanks for sharing this, James. You did well to get the sun and steam. 60163 was really shifting! I was up at Worting Junction and again managed to photograph the train in the sun, but the northerly wind did cause the smoke to drift across the latter carriages of the train. Oh well, it was still good to see Tornado in blue.
