I was thinking of going over to Tilehurst to see this one through and I ckecked with National Rail enquiries to see what other trains were operating Pangbourne - Reading. I find to my surprise that the Cath Ex Worcester is shown as a departure from Pangbourne, is on time, and a ticket can be purchased for £3.10 to Reading!! There is a note to say that it is not part of the normal timetable and that it may only run today. I've never seen such an entry before. Entry below.

19:25 Pangbourne [PAN] Reading [RDG] 19:36 11m 0 More Details on the 19:25 service from Pangbourne to Reading on time

Can't think of when that last happened. There was the Woking celebration back in time and this had a scheduled service train to Waterloo.

Interrogated FGWs iPhone app on reading that and found the same. Tweeted them and they can't fathom it! Fingers crossed we don't get bombarded at Pangbourne!

Have only done one trip with a genny car - not the one on this trip I don't think - and unless you were "window hanging" in the cash next to it, it was inaudible. Got permission to do a bit of sound recording from it and once the loco started off, the exhaust noise drowned that of the generator car. I do believe that one of the genny cars is a bit noisier though.

Sounded great storming through Cholsey this evening, was going to put up a video snap but the uploader doesn't seem to want to work. The video itself is currently rendering, will upload it onto YouTube tonight but it will stay private until the morning.

After taking the trouble to get to a muddy field south of Honeybourne in the dark, wind and rain I thought I may as well post the vid - even though you cant see anything! Enjoy the noise from 70000, blowing off as she goes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC8gWI6s4BQ

This particular one is a darn sight noisier than any of the others, a horrible constant low tone drone. You can hear it before the train appears as in 6029's video at Bracknell.

I think most if not all DBS/Riviera rakes are ETH only, with the possible exception of the Choc/Cream MK1's I think they are Air only too.

You seem a hard man to please Buseng, don't like Diesels on the back, don't like the Genny Van, DBS don't do Steam Heat, what would you suggest within reason ?.

Oh piffle, buseng, you just like moaning. Watch my video again and then tell me whether you really hear it coming (or going) at Lower Basildon. As for the passengers, it's isolated from passenger accommodation in the train, no-one's sat next to it. Give me a nice warm train any day. No doubt you'll be on here next Tuesday moaning that someone's left a sooty footprint on your lounge carpet next to the chimney......

Good old fashioned steam heating doesn't exist on most of the charter rakes. I imagine the tour operator would rather have a warm train than a cold train full of complaining passengers.
Why would anyone have to 'endure' the gen car all day? It's not as if it's passenger accommodation as well. Just be grateful there is still steam to enjoy on the mainline rather than nit picking over silly things.

Was also very surprised to see it listed like any other service on National Rail's "UK Train Times" app. Waiting at Chiswick, I looked at the app on my phone to check the possibility of any "crossing" services re the pic I wanted to get. And there it was. The full route from London to Worcester listed with live train information. Seem to recall it registered two minutes late departing Victoria and then due on time at Chiswick. Would be marvellous if that live info was available on the app for all steam excursions!

Some of the Victoria to Weymouth trains last summer appeared on the app, but it wasn't consistent.

My offering from yesterday's trip, seen on both the outward and return legs at Cholsey.

    Enjoy :)

If you can find an affordable way of fitting steam heat to Riviera's mark 1s and 2s, about 40 of which are used on steam tours, plus find a way of testing it every year to make sure it works, I'm sure they'd be interested in it. It's not like VT or WCRC, where they can light up a steam loco whenever they want to test the steam heat.

I've watched 6029's video, and I couldn't hear the genny. Unlike buseng, if I'm going to be sat on a train for 12 hours in the middle of December, I want to be warm! I'm perfectly happy window hanging in the freezing cold, but if I'm sat down I want to be warm, as I suspect most of the other passengers do.

Looks like the cork came out of someones big end and a few posters starting spitting oil around the thread.
6 posts have been removed, whilst entertaining, they didn't add much value to the topic.
Aspect is green, let this thread move along...

Depends on what you mean by "most" - it doesn't exist on most (if any) of the DBS/Riveria sets, but West Coast, Vintage Trains and SRPS still use it.

    Can't argue with that.

[QUOTE[Why would anyone have to 'endure' the gen car all day? It's not as if it's passenger accommodation as well.[/QUOTE]

As buseng says, 6310 is definitely a lot louder than the other two generator vans which have regularly appeared on DBS/Riviera rakes, particularly compared to 35469 which, I think, was designed to be as quiet as possible when it was converted. Having said, that I've never had to sit in the carriage next to 6310 for a whole day so can't comment on how load it sounds from within the train - probably not too bad as it tends to be at the premier class (i.e. non-enthusiast) end of the train and obviously is only used in cold weather so all windows will probably be tightly closed (except when it is doing it's job too well and creating tropical conditions inside the train - ETH in Mark 1s can be rather over the top at times).

    Absolutely.

Funny HaHa! I only just come back on here because I have better things to do at this time of year. Despite some posts being removed & mods comments, people are still at it! Why don't you all grow up & leave it out. After a PM from a mod & comments on here from the same, I was going to let it go & say no more. But I'm not allowed to, am I, thanks to others.
Mods, again please remove further non-topic posts & request no further silly comments.
