    Re: York triangle threat?

That is excellent news after the doom and gloom in the first few pages of this thread...NR disposing of the land to make a quick buck, not interested what happens to the charter work etc etc..... Any humble pie anyone???

Got to be the best Xmas gift of the year! Just proves how much Network Rail acknowledges the role that steam locomotives have to play on the national network, now and for many years to come!

And a Merry Christmas to you Brian, I'll be digging into my stock of Salutation today, but might have a couple left over as late presents for those on the Yorkshire Booze cruise on Friday...

Seems odd with all the talk of the ORR daft idea about charter trains NR have just installed this turntable. Does that make sense?

Perhaps it leads to a conclusion that the TT was installed for more significant reasons than turning charter locos.

    Re: York triangle threat?

It's not just Steam that needs turning, class 91's, HST Power cars or Unit driving cars occasionally need it, the table at Heaton woulden't have survived if this wasn't the case.

    Re: York triangle threat?

Is the table new or recovered from elsewhere? How does it operate - what kind of motor drives it and is is electrically powered or by compressed air?

    Re: York triangle threat?

As stated earlier in the thread the table has been`relocated from Ferme Park, where it had been unusable for many years. Train operators objected to the loss of the triangle turning facility so I would guess the reason NR was able to act so quickly is because:
    1. They want to get on with their redevelopment of the triangle site without further delay.
    2. They own the turntable and the site, so they didn't need permission or funding from anybody else.

Do EC have a TMD at York. If not I doubt they would turn 43s or 91s there...

    Re: York triangle threat?

No but there's only a limited number of Triangles and places where such moves can be done, Im not sure if you can turn at Leeds (for Neville Hill) for example, but even if you could, getting a path to do so is another matter, a 91 can do 100 + blunt end first if it needs to go and turn.

Failures and out of the ordinary events can also require things to be turned where they woulden't need to be in normal circumstances, could even be say a standard Diesel where one of the cabs has been failed, could be turned and driven from the other end to get home.

EC are at Neville Hill, no problem, if required, to just nip down the road to the York turntable.

    Re: York triangle threat?

There's a turntable at Neville Hill anyway. No idea if it's still used though. 91s very rarely get turned anyway, and if they do then it's usually with the whole set round the bridges at Newcastle.

I finally remembered to look out at Ferme Park this morning. The turntable pit has been filled in and associated tracks removed.

I think people missed a point here..

the Turntable at Ferme Park was out of use.. which implies it was not being used.. so no loss there.

    Re: York triangle threat?

Please forgive the cross-post, but if I've read the times for 5972's LE move today correctly, the new turntable is about to be used to turn a steam loco for the first time. Anyone in the area to witness this little bit of history?
