Are all of the Christmas Dining trains in the evening? I am booked on next Saturday's Countryman (15th) and the ticket that came in post a while ago says 19.30 dep. from Alresford. However, the website still says:

"Departure and arrival times for these services are still to be confirmed, so please return here soon to find out."

It has said that since they were put on the website some time ago and has not been updated!

Yes, the 15th is an evening train, "Belle" timings i.e 19:30 ex Alresford, back about 20:55, then 22:30. Last night we had 31806, was a bit slippy but no major mishaps. Countryman is a shorter train, the lunch time service on Friday used 925 and she seemed OK. Re website, I believe there are some technical issues which is why the timetable for 2013 isn't up yet

Many thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Looking forward to the great food as are the rest of the family.
    Also, that's a great picture of 925.

Because I had a little bit of time on my hands today, I decided to pay a visit to the Mid Hants Railway so I could capture 925 Cheltenham in action for an upcoming project that I am currently working on. I have uploaded a couple of pieces of footage from today, of 925 ascending Medstead Bank with the 11:56 service from Ropley (tender first), and then on the 12:50 service from Alton to Medstead. The noise was quite incredible, and I hope that you enjoy listening to this 25-odd minute soundtrack.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but it appears that ground works for the Holiday chalets and toilet/shower block have started at Ropley, any one know when they are due for completion?, as those extra facilities will no doubt be a god send for Joe Public at the galas!

I'd be grateful for a heads up on the loco roster for this week - the website is only showing Jan - March. (I have emailed but no reply after a week). Thanks!

34007 currently (08:15) sitting on back of low loader in Alresford station car park....facing Country! If not turned (and it is possible) that will be 4:1 for locos facing out of Alton, with only the Black 5 facing London. Pity because I had hoped that Wadebridge might be on the RAT on Saturday and had thought of taking some pictures. Oh well.

Didn't know where to put this but it looks like 850 is going to be out of action for a while. Reading the latest Ropley Shed report she has blown a golf-ball sized hole in one of the main steam pipes to the cylinders. As it is a casting will this require a new casting or can it be fixed with a weld?

Its not impossible to repair a casting even a casting subject to internal pressure fluctuation such as this item. Welding would not be a prefered route for me cast iron welding is a very difficult art and the resultant repair strength is no where near original metal strength, Braizing might be to repair and seal the orifice with a hand made headed plug fitted from the inside, then patched externally.

The most suitable repair would be an internal patch substantially larger than the failed area with a similar patch on the outside fixing these patches with stitch bolting through both plates and sandwiching the casting. As I don't have an exact idea of the shape and location of the failiure in the casting its difficult to say, but most things are fixable, unless bureacracy gets in the way, and predicts only a new casting is acceptable.

Having effected a repair , its then necessary to prove the repairs mechanical integrity, by hydraulic test. I would expect the pressure systems Engineering Inspector to want to see 1.25 x max Boiler pressure for 5 minutes, to ascertain that the casting was not going to fail again in service even though it rarely would see that sort of pressure and is contained beneath the loco .

    Just a view Best Regards

If the casting wall has gone in one place, what is the thickness of the rest of it likely to be? New casting I reckon.

With any luck 34007 Wadebridge will see a bit more action.

    I'll second that, Lee :)

Though she was misbehaving a bit yesterday, middle section of the ashpan would not fully closed.................................................... you get the picture!

Anyway isn't Nellie supposed to be of on a holiday somewhere soon? (I know she is, but I just can't remember where exactly!)

Popped into the yard at Roley first thing yesterday, God those holiday chalets don't half dominate the skyline.....................................................

You maybe right, but I was under the impression that she was off to foreign pastures sooner rather than later, if she is then hopefully the repairs will be completed, but as its the NRM's property they would surely have the final say on the method of repair,or do they? I have no idea of how these arrangements work! Is it a case of you use it, you break it, you fix it, but you have to agree the method of repairs with us first or is it just a case of the railway getting on with it?
