The NYMR website reports that Lambton Railway 29 is due into service in 2013, but there's no information on the website at all about No 5 - the Lambton Locomotive Trust website hasn't been updated for a number of years either. Does anyone have information as to what is happening with Lambton No 5?

Also, are there any books on the Lambton railway?

    Thanks, Rob

No.5 remains stored in the NELPG shed at Grosmont. I don't know of any current plans to overhaul it.

Rob, a 9-page article entitled 'Philadelphia, a Notable Coal Railway' by Bryan Syddall appeared in Back Track volume 18, number 12, dated December 2004.

I hope that once 29 is finished then work may begin on no. 5, it was always thought to be the better engine of the two by most impartial crews, I believe. On the Lambton Locomotives Trust website there are some articles about the Lambton Railway that make interesting reading.

I thought No 5's overhaul started in 2007, but was stopped (possibly due to the cylinder block being deemed beyond repair), she hasn't run since 1996 so with the aid of new technologies it would be nice to see her back!

As I understand, No.5 has been part dismantled by members of the owning Trust with a view to ascertaining the exact condition of the cylinder block and hence the various potential options for repair or renewal.

Unfortunately, the other Lambton, No.29, is currently stopped with some cylinder problems - exactly what needs doing is again under investigation.

For 29 the cylinder block is to be replaced with the drawings now in hand according to Moors Line (in house magazine)
