If you stick with the nrm idea, of not disposing of the originals, you can always put them back later for cosmetic display.

Frames have been shot-blasted and under-coated at Minehead. tender is at DBS Barton Hill, and there are 3 or 4 containers full of all the other bits waiting to be cleaned. I'll try and get some details on the wheels, boiler and the new-design cylinders from my copy of the latest KM magazine...

Done! As Sheff said though - we cant read every post on the forum so suggest reporting such issues as it flags it for our attention where as we may miss a request in a post in the thread.

    From the King's Messenger : -

"Boiler : - The initial examination and NDT of the boiler has not shown anything that we were not expecting, with some plates work renewal required where it is almost minimum thickness. The Firebox tubeplate has been removed and the boiler has been shot blasted to remove all scale."

A video of 6024 has appeared on Youtube, posted by PSOV. It is enrtitled
"Trains in Trouble 6 on the footplate of 6024 climbing Dainton"
    To quote their caption :-
"Following an major overhaul, when the King was modified to come within the height restrictions demanded by the modern railway, the locomotive struggled to maintain steam pressure. With the draughting now compromised the locomotive was a shadow of it's former self, something which has dogged the locomotives performances to the present day."

Is the above comment accurate? I would have thought that reducing the height of the chimney top by around (at a guess) 4" would not adversely affect the draughting/steaming.

Sounds total codswallop, of the problems 6024 had in that period (admittedly there were quite a few), I seem to recall hot boxes and the air pump were at fault more often than not, possibly someone who saw it on the Settle & Carlisle and was unaware than crew unfamiliarity with the type was the prime cause of it's poor performance there ?.

In it's last ticket it seemed a pretty free running and reliable machine after emerging from Tyseley so certainly nothing in the "to the present day" comment.

When it's back in action, it would be nice to take it back to the S&C with a WCRC crew familiar with it to put all the accusations to bed.

A remember a couple of hot boxes one after a trip to Bath( and due to haul a trip to Worcester the following day but didn't), and another on a Torbay Express taken off the train at Taunton. I seem to recall an air pump problem along the seawall section.I do not remember any steaming issues. My last trip I behind it to Cardiff with good climbs of( with i think 12 on )up Filton outward and Sapperton on the return.

Height available for an exhaust system is viewed as very important. Look at the work of LDP and of David Wardale and his class 26. But for UK designs the systems are so poorly optimised the chance of cutting down the chimney height making significant difference could be viewed as slight, though the height reductions imposed on GN designs to make them suitable for the LNE loading gauge were felt to have a negative impact. For anyone really interested there is no substitute for testing and measurement.

Am I misremembering it or did 6000 also have regular hot box issues before it stopped running?
