Just received circular from LoRie announcing a Plandampf revival. 2 class 44 2-10-0's and a class 41 2-8-2 on scheduled and photo freight plus passenger on April 11-13 2013 (more light and warmth than the "traditional" late October slot.......)
Lets hope they get the numbers to make it happen. If you have never experienced a Plandampf in the Werratal with 2400t gravel train finale then this may be your only chance - dont miss it - the sight and sound of 3 massive German locos slogging up the banks south of Eisenach is magnificent.
I presume that David Sprackland will again be coordinating the UK bookings but I have not yet heard form David so please wait for more news here, from David direct or in steam railway.
For a taste of previous plandampf see (amongst the many others on the tube) some of my efforts here:

Spoke to David a couple of weeks back when news of the revival hit the German forums. He's awaiting final details from Henry and will then be posting out to the usual suspects.

Not having done one of these before, is it a bit of a closed group thing or is anyone welcome? If the latter, I wonder if someone would be able to post details here once they're available?

Available to anyone, if you pay your money for it. Details, including prices, at

    Plandampf-Team LoRie

Click on the pdf link. It's in German but basically Thursday is photo charter freights, Friday and Saturday are normal freights and charter passenger services. When I've them before I've booked through David Sprackland, who sometimes posts on here. His website, which hopefully will be updated, is Plandampf

The Saturday should also see 03 2155 on a Weimar - Eisenach - Meiningen special as well.

Fabulous events that cost a lot to organise but once you've paid your participation fee you will be sent working timetables, maps with photo locations and other pertinent info. Participation fee will also give free travel on the steam passenger trains.

As noted in replies already posted by Spamcan81 and 5944, as long as you pay the participation fee all are welcome. David Sprackland usually distributes an English version of the details already available in German and most UK participants make their booking through David. No doubt one of us on the mailing list will notify this thread when English details are available from David. There is usually a sizeable contingent from the UK as well as steam folk from all across Europe and sometimes beyond. In my opinion it is as close as it gets to the days of "real steam" with photographers generally very respectful of each other's locations and superb sights, sounds and smells from the massive, magnificent and noisy German locos. If this year's event goes ahead - go! you are unlikely to regret it.

Some superb shots and inventive angles there - thanks for sharing. We missed the 2010 so interesting to see some more views of that. Links to some of my vids of Plandampfs are earlier in this thread if you havent already viewed.

Agreed. If anyone gets in the way there's the usual chorus of "Hallo" from the gallery and the miscreants almost always move out of the way. We did get a group of three Germans last year who chatted, made phone calls etc. throughout a Class 44 departure from Oberrhon, thereby ruining sound and video sequences. They look quite surprised when I gave them a bit of a roasting in their own language. :)

If anyone has the details in English or details of how to book via UK contacts could they post them or PM them to me. Its been many many years since I did a plandampf and feel that I should do another one before they finally disappear from Germany.

See post number 7. David Sprackland will almost certainly be the UK contact for bookings in English and one of us here will post details as soon as we get them from David.

Saw David on Sunday at LUL150 and he says he'll be posting details in the near future. Dates confirmed and you can book direct with the organisers of course but I find it easier to send David a cheque as opposed to arranging a euro money transfer.

Confirmation received by email today from David Sprackland with details of the event. Anyone who wants to book should contact David by email at plandampf(at)hotmail.co.uk . The organisers need suitable numbers of paid up participants by 15 Feb in order for the event to go ahead so dont delay. As already mentioned in this thread - if you havent been - go now - you wont regret it!!

There is also the bonus of two main line excursions in the area. An 03 will be working to Meiningen via Eisenach and the Werratal on the Saturday and the 41 is booked Eisenach - Katzhütte on the Sunday. A veritable feast of main line action that's not to be missed.

This is the first Eisenach event I will miss for five years as we are on a family hols in the Isle of Man. Shame as it is looking good with the 03 out as well. I am sure you will all have a great time.

I have just negotiated a pass for my alternative Reko fix and it may be of interest to some. This is a mainline photo train which in many ways is as good as a Plandampf. It should have an authenthic rake of brown wagons and will be timed to allow chasing in cars. It celebrates 25 years since the end of steam on the mainline and travels some of the most scenic lines in Saxony.

04.-05.Mai: "25 Jahre Abschied vom Regelspurdampf bei der Deutschen Reichsbahn"

    Fotogüterzüge mit 50 3616

    Eisenbahnmuseum Schwarzenberg see under Termine.

    Hopefully it will happen!

Even the prospect of less than perfect weather can,t dampen the spirits on the eve of another Plandampf :)

Have spent three days in Dresden for both narrow and standard gauge steam. Weather has been good and much better than forecast. Moving to Werratal Wednesday afternoon and hoping forecast is as wrong there as it has been here.
